Vocational Work Task Boxes Bundle | Mail, Filing, Restock + Picking

About This Product

Work task boxes are one of the best independent-work tools in a high school special education room, but most of the ones out there look like they were made for second graders. These four sets look and feel like real work: interoffice mail, office filing, supply room restocking, and warehouse order picking. Students print, cut, and work through them on their own while you take accuracy data.

I've spent 20+ years in education, and I've built a lot of task boxes out of whatever was in the supply closet. These are the versions I wish I'd had: real job tasks, clear levels, and data built in.

How every set works

Each set uses the same structure, so once a student learns one box they can move to the next without new directions:

  • Level A: match. Students match the item to an exact label. This builds the routine and the vocabulary.

  • Level B: use a reference. Students use a directory, an inventory sheet, or a location key to decide where something goes, the way they would on a real job.

  • Level C: handle twists. Missing information, look-alike names, and items that don't belong. This is where students practice problem solving and asking for help.

  • Self-check codes so students can check their own work and you can see who needs support.

  • Blank cards so you can add the real names, rooms, or codes from your school or a local job site.

  • A data sheet and a 10-session accuracy graph for IEP progress monitoring.

The four boxes

  • Interoffice Mail: sort envelopes by room, department, and name. This is a real task at schools, hospitals, and offices.

  • Office Filing: alphabetical order, number order, and date order, the three filing systems students will see.

  • Supply Room Restock: read par levels, count what's on the shelf, and figure out how many to bring out.

  • Warehouse Order Picking: read location codes and pick the right items for an order.

How teachers use it

  • Independent work stations: students rotate through boxes while you work with a small group

  • Pre-vocational training before a school job (mail delivery, front office, supply room) or a community work site

  • IEP data: the levels and graphs give you clear evidence of progress on work skills and independence goals

  • Para-run stations: the structure is simple enough that a para or job coach can run a box and record data without extra training

Setting them up

Print the cards on cardstock, laminate them, and cut them apart. I keep each level in its own zip bag inside a shoebox or photo box, with the label and self-check code on the lid. The first time, model Level A with the student, then step back. Once students know the routine, a box takes about 10 to 20 minutes, which fits a station rotation.

Why the levels matter

Real jobs rarely give you a perfect match. Mail comes in with a misspelled name. A shelf is missing its label. An order lists something that isn't in stock. Level C builds in exactly those problems on purpose, so students practice what to do when something doesn't fit: check the reference again, set it aside, or ask a supervisor. That's the skill employers tell us they want most, and it's hard to teach with a worksheet. You'll see quickly which students can work through a twist on their own and which ones need a script for asking for help, and both are useful things to write into an IEP.

Who it's for

High school and middle school special education teachers, 18-21 transition program staff, job coaches, and homeschool parents of teens working on job skills and independent work.

Print once, laminate, and store each level in its own bag or box. The names, rooms, and codes are made up, and the blank cards let you swap in your own.
