The Giver (2014): Complete Movie Guide

"The Giver" is a 2014 movie based on the novel of the same name by Lois Lowry. The movie is set in a seemingly utopian society where all pain, suffering, and conflict have been eradicated. The society is tightly controlled, and everyone is assigned a role at the age of 18. The movie follows Jonas, a young man who is selected to become the Receiver of Memory, a highly respected and secretive position in the community. Jonas is mentored by the Giver, an older man who holds all of the memories of the past, including the painful ones that the community has chosen to forget. As Jonas learns about the past, he becomes disillusioned with the strict rules and lack of freedom in his society. He decides to take action and plans to escape with a baby who is scheduled to be "released," a term that he discovers means to be euthanized. As Jonas and the baby flee, the community becomes aware of their absence, and the Chief Elder sends out a search party to find them. Jonas and the baby encounter many dangers on their journey, but eventually, they make it to the edge of the community, where they find a sled waiting for them. Jonas realizes that the sled is a memory from the Giver and uses it to escape over a hill, where they see a glimpse of a more colorful and vibrant world. "The Giver" movie explores themes of individuality, conformity, memory, and the cost of a perfect society. It stars Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, Jeff Bridges as the Giver, and Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder. This 22-question guide will help your students get the most out of this powerful movie. Influenced by the novel, A Night Divided, the S.T.E.A.M.-based activities included in this product focus on the content areas of math, science, engineering, and art. Students will learn about historical events such as the Space Race, the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, and the work of artist Keith Haring, who used artistic expression to advocate for social justice. In addition, students become engineers as they design a method to dig through mountains to create sturdy and leak-proof tunnels; learn about simple machines in order to design and build a transportation system that can carry a load of dirt and rocks; and design and build a structure that will hold weight without collapsing. Here is a ready-to-go country research social studies project for your students in 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th grade. Each student will choose a country (or you can assign them), complete focused research about it, and create an organized project with paragraphs and visuals to share their learning. How to Use: •Print pages 2-13 for each student. •Page 2 has clear instructions for the entire project, places to write due dates, and a checklist to keep students on track. •Page 3 has seven different prompts for students to research. Each student needs to pick at least four prompts to include in their unique project. •Pages 4-6 are graphic organizers for your students to use as they take notes and record their research sources (page 6 is optional). •Pages 7-9 are templates for students to use to write at least four paragraphs about their country (page 9 is optional). They could also type and print these paragraphs instead. •Page 10 is for students to record and illustrate fast facts about their country including the flag, leader, and popular food. •Page 11 is for students to draw and label five famous attractions (natural or human-made) that are found in their country. •Page 12 is a title page for the project. •Page 13 is a rubric you can use to assess the project. Let students see it at the beginning of the project so they know what the expectations are. Over several weeks, your students can complete their research, write and proofread their paragraphs, and draw the visual components of their project. They can present their projects to each other so they can learn about many countries around the world. You could even have a Countries of the World Fair! Finally, you can use the rubric to assess each project. Grades to Use With: This project is designed for middle grades students in 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th grade who are learning about library research skills and expository writing- specifically expository paragraphs. Integers are everywhere in our lives! Get your students excited about learning about integers including using number lines and finding the difference between integers in a variety of real-life situations. This is perfect for students in grade six who are first learning about rational numbers. Social Media: Up Votes and Down Votes: You will read each statement one at a time to your class. Then ask for upvotes (and count the hands) and ask for downvotes (and count the hands). Remind students they can abstain from voting on a statement if they are ambivalent. If you think it will help your class, have students vote anonymously by putting their heads down. Record the upvotes and downvotes for each of the 10 statements. Students complete the math (which is really adding integers) to get each statement’s final score. (Extension: This activity can lead to a mini-lesson on facts vs. opinions.) Cities: Temperatures and Elevations: Students will need internet access for this activity. They will explore two cities: one with a positive temperature in degrees Celsius and one with a negative temperature in degrees Celsius. Using a number line, they will compare these two temperatures. Then, they must find the elevation (in meters) of six cities around the world to complete three math questions. Sports: Golf and Football: Students will apply adding and subtracting integers to a golf game to calculate the player’s score above or below par. Then, they use integers to calculate if a football team scores a touchdown. (Extension: Students can create their own football scenario. They can choose a starting point, make up 5 plays, and trade with a friend. ) Financial Literacy: Bank Account: Students add and subtract integers to keep a running bank balance in an account with an overdraft. They see how purchases reduce your balance and deposits increase your balance. I have included two versions, one with decimals and one with whole numbers only.
