Synonyms Card Sort This card sort activity is intended for practice identifying pairs of synonyms. The five sets of cards contain 14 cards each. The student may work on the card sort independently or with a partner. *Note that there is often more than one synonym for a given word. Students should choose the best match from the cards provided. Included in this material · 5 sets of synonym cards (7 pairs of synonyms per set) · Answer key · Recording sheet Words Used in the Sorts Set 1: big/large, sick/ill, jump/leap, small/little, glad/happy, mad/angry, start/begin Set 2: own/have, bag/sack, sad/unhappy, yell/shout, car/auto, over/above, make/build Set 3: hat/cap, house/home, fast/quick, cold/cool, run/jog, shut/close, rabbit/bunny Set 4: talk/speak, baby/infant, pail/bucket, pal/friend, good/fine, dirty/messy, see/look Set 5: cry/sob, sip/drink, walk/stroll, fix/repair, rock/stone, road/street, smell/sniff Using the Card Sorts Before use, print, laminate, and cut the cards to be used. Take a second card and decide if it is a synonym for the card already out. If so, place it next to the synonym. If not, place the card below to create a column. 3. Continue until all cards are sorted, creating pairs of synonyms. If a child is unsure of the meaning of a word, encourage the use of resources – a friend, dictionary, or thesaurus. 4. Check work with the answer key. 5. Record work in a language notebook or on the included recording sheet. Extension Activity If desired, have students do an extension after completing the card sort. To check their understanding, have them write an additional synonym for several of the pairs of synonyms matched, if possible. Have thesauruses available for use as resources! Fast Fact Squares: A strategic game of math facts! Be the player with the most squares at the end of the game by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. This game is great for a variety of ages, whether they are just learning their addition facts (adding 1 through 6), are practicing all of their addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division facts, for those who know all of their facts but are practicing their fluency...or for those who just like strategy games! This game is great to incorporate into your math lesson or throughout the day as a fast finisher activity. Students and teachers alike will also love it as an indoor recess game . Students may not even realize they are practicing their facts or how much strategy is really involved! Materials Needed: • Game Board •2 dice •Pen or pencil Object of the Game : •To be the player with the most colored squares How to Play: Decide which player goes first by rolling the dice. The person with the highest roll goes first First player rolls both dice. They may either add, subtract, multiply or divide the dice. Player finds their answer on the game board and draws ONE line by connecting any two dots that surround that number. Next player’s turn Play continues back and forth When a player connects two dots that closes off a square, they color in the square and earn a point. This player gets to roll again! Once game board has all squares colored in, player with the most points wins! Examples •Player rolls a ”6” and a “2” •Connect dots that surround a “4” (6 – 2 = 4) •Connect dots that surround a ”12” (6 x 2 = 12) •Connect dots that surround a “3” (6 ➗ 2 = 3) •Connect dots that surround an “8” (6 + 2 = 8) Challenge •Another option for keeping score is that each player earns the points that they square off. •For example, if a player squares off a “12” square, that player earns 12 points. •This adds in more strategy for squaring off higher numbers as well as additional practice for adding!
