Letter W Reading Strips

Practice reading simple sentences with these letter W reading strips. Students will read words that begin with the letter V using the picture clue on each strip. There are 14 total reading strips that focus on the initial /w/ sound. All sentences are in the form of "W is for ___." These letter W reading strips are suitable to preschool or kindergarten kids who are learning to identify the initial sound of the letter W. These cards are perfect for introducing new vocabulary to students. What is Included: This resource contains 14 reading strips for the letter W. When to Use: Literacy Centers - These cards work well in a literacy or reading center for students to read independently or with a partner. Small Group Activity - The teacher can pull aside a small group of students who need extra practice with the target sound to use these cards. Early Finisher Task - If students finish a task early, they can grab these cards to look at and read. Take Home Book - The black and white pages can be sent home for students to make their own letter sound book. Task Box Activity by using pencil boxes Ways to Use Teachers can place the cards on a ring for a simple reading ring for a reading center . The teacher can cut the picture from the strip and have students match the picture to the sentence. Teachers can have simply have students read the strips to practice recognizing words that begin with the target letter. Skills Assessed: Reading Simple Sentences Beginning Sounds Using picture clues to figure out new words These reading strips are a low prep activity. The teacher simply needs to print out the strips and then cut them apart to create this activity. The strips can be laminated if desired. They can be places in a reading or literacy center and used over and over. By placing these strips on a ring or in a pencil box, students can easily take out and clean up this literacy center . These strips can be combined with the strips for other letters to create a sorting activity. Students can also sort the strips according to each beginning sound.

This carnivals reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Alphabet Mats to Build A Letter

Get students excited avout learning letters with these hands-on alphabet mats! This alphabet activity uses different kinds of manipulatives or craft supplies to build each letter mats for a hands-on approach to practice letter recognition and formation. What is Included: There is one mat for each capital letter. There is one mat for each lowercase letter. There is one mat for each number 1-10. Ways to use these mats: Students can use pouch tops to build each letter. Students can use cotton balls or pom poms to create each letter. Students can stick stickers in each circle to fill in each letter. Students can use bingo dabbers to make each letter. Students can use mini erasers to fill in each letter. One thing I have done with these mats is to provide manipulatives that begin with the target letter for students to use to fill in each letter mat. This way, students are exposed to the letter's beginning sound as well as its shape and form. Turn the Mats into a Game! To make these mats a game, provide students with a die. The students will roll the die and, then the students will add the correct number of manipulatives to the letter mat until they build the entire letter. Where to Use: Literacy Centers - Simply place the mats and manipulatives in a literacy center for students to complete alone or with a partner. Morning Tubs or Baskets - Place these mats in a morning bin for students to complete as their classmates arrive to class. Quiet Time Activity - These mats can be used during a quiet time for students who do not nap, helping them stay engaged while their peers sleep. These alphabet mats are a no prep option for teachers to put in their literacy centers. The teacher simply needs to add the desired manipulatives that students will use to complete the mats.
