Consonant Blends Phonic Games

Here are five phonic games to help in the teaching of consonant blends. Many children struggle with consonant blends, but these games can help take the stress out of learning! All children like a game- not least for the one to one time with an adult! How to use The games are easy to make and easy to play, needing no other equipment than in some cases a feely bag/little box in which to put cards. Simply print out the pages needed for each game and play - print and play. To make the games last longer, I suggest laminating the boards and the picture/letter cards as appropriate. What is included? Game 1: Match each blend to the picture that begins with it. Game 2: Cut up the word cards and take it in turns to find the consonant blend missing letter cards - either of an initial or final blend. Game 3: Find the missing letter of an initial blend Game 4: Find the initial blend for each word card Game 5: Read and match the CVCC word with a short vowel sound to the picture Who are these games for? Children of all abilities will love these games . They have been tried and tested on many children. They were devised by a teacher with many years of experience in teaching children of all abilities to read and spell with phonics. They are best played one-to-one with an adult so that the adult can model sounding out and reading words with a consonant blend. Once a child is more confident, two children can be asked to play together while an adult supervises. As the children play these games , the sie teacher will observe the reading and spelling strategies being used by the child to ensure that the child is noy learning to guess. Phonic games help to take the stress out of learning so they are great for pupils with special needs (including those with dyslexia) who need that bit of extra practice.

BR Words Beginning Blends Matching Mats

This comprehensive literacy center focuses on BR words, offering a hands-on activity that targets reading words as well as reading simple sentences. These mats help with reading comprehension skills as well as reading one and two syllable words. Included in this resource: 1 BR word mat 1 BR sentence mat Picture cards corresponding to each mat for matching purposes To complete this activity , students will read each BL word or sentence on the mat and then match the corresponding pictures. Students can work independently or with a partner, providing opportunities for cooperative learning. There are several ways to use these BR word beginning blend mats: Lay the images on top of the word or sentence. Utilize hook and loop fasteners to attach the images. Use a baking sheet and magnets to match the images. Students will appreciate the hands-on nature of this activity , as they can manipulate the images for a hands-on approach to show their learning. The bold and colorful images will capture students' attention, and the easily recognizable pictures will ensure their success in completing the activity . These literacy activities allow students to practice target words both in the context of sentences and in isolation. When to Use: Literacy Center - Students can work independently or with a partner to read these words Morning Tub or Basket - The cards can be placed in a morning bin for students to work on as students arrive to class. Small Group Activity - The teacher can choose a small group of students or a specific group of words for students to work on in a small group setting with the teacher. Skills assessed through this activity include reading BR beginning blend words in isolation and in context, as well as reading comprehension. The low-prep nature of this BR words matching mats activity allow teachers to use little time when putting the center together. The mats simply need to be printed out, while the matching cards can be printed and cut. Lamination is optional for increased durability.
