Interactive Chemistry Quiz: GHS Symbols – Genially + PDF Version
Science, STEM, Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Technology, Basic Science, Biology, P.E. & Health, Homeschool Templates, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Teacher Tools, Experiments, Activities, Labs, Worksheets & Printables, Escape Room, Games, Presentations, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes
Interactive Chemistry Quiz: GHS Symbols – Genially (+ PDF Version) Bring lab safety to life with this interactive quiz on the GHS (Globally Harmonized System) hazard symbols – perfect for middle and high school chemistry lessons. Whether you're starting the unit or wrapping up a safety review, this quiz adds variety, visual appeal, and a bit of fun to your lesson plan. You’ll get two versions of the quiz: – A PDF version that can be used digitally or printed (but it works not well) – A Genially link that leads to an animated, interactive version (includes sound – which can be muted) Both versions test students on the meanings of the various GHS symbols – from corrosive substances to environmental hazards. The quiz includes original clipart and my own glitter-animated GHS symbols to make the content more visually appealing without distracting from the important safety message. I usually use the Genially quiz for individual work in the computer lab or on tablets, so each student can go at their own pace. But it also works well as a station activity , a class-wide quiz , or even as homework , depending on your classroom setup. At the end of the PDF, you’ll find: A QR code to scan directly to the Genially A clickable link for browser access An iframe embed code , if you want to use it on your (non-commercial) learning platform Attention: The interactive PDF does not contain the full scope of the material. The quiz works. Unfortunately, the additional tasks do not. Using Genially is therefore recommended and much more motivating for the pupils. For the interactive quiz you need an internet connection and a terminal device. The quiz can be carried out with the whole class or as partner or individual work. I prefer individual work at each student's own pace. To get to the Genially link, either scan the QR code at the end of the document or click on the link button available there. You can also copy the iframe code and embed the Genially on a learning platform or other... The Genially can be used either at the beginning of the topic or as a backup. It is also worth using as a station in station work. The interactive version includes motivating sound effects , a self-paced structure , and a clear, age-appropriate design for grades 7–10. 📌 Important note : The Genially quiz is protected by copyright. It’s for your own classroom use only . Please don’t share the link or embed it outside a private, secure learning environment. Sharing with colleagues, online platforms, or social media is not permitted. I hope your students enjoy reviewing GHS symbols as much as mine do! – Heike from @Lernfitness Did You Know? Sheets could be laminated to enable year-on-year use. Cut sheets into cards. Prior Knowledge Required Atoms combine to form molecules. If combining atoms are from the same element, a molecule of an element is formed but if they are from different elements, a molecule of a compound is formed. An element contains only one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different types of atom combined together chemically. Each element has its own symbol. Some symbols are the capitalized first letter of the name of the element . Some symbols have two letters from the name with only the first capitalized. Some symbols are taken from the Latin name of the element. Know that a chemical formula tells you how many atoms of each element are in a compound. Know that if there is no letter after a symbol in a formula, there is only one atom of that element in the compound. Know that if a formula contains brackets, every element inside the bracket is multiplied by that number. Know that compounds ending in ide contain only two elements. Know that compounds containing CO3 are carbonates, SO4 are sulphates and NO3 are nitrates. Know that mono is one, di is two and tri is three. Be able to name and work out the number of atoms of each element in a compound without brackets in its formula. See more resources from Elf Off the Shelf

How to play directions Preparation Use back-to-back printing to copy a set for each group of 4 pupils. Sheets can be laminated to enable year-on-year use. Trim sheets into cards. Prior Knowledge Required: An Overview of Magnets and Magnetic Fields Composition of Magnets: Magnets are constructed using magnetic materials. Common materials include Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, and their corresponding alloys. Pole Interactions: Magnets have two types of poles - North and South. When two like poles (e.g., North and North) come close to each other, they repel. Conversely, when opposite poles (e.g., North and South) are brought together, they attract each other. Magnetic Fields: Surrounding every magnet is an invisible force field known as the magnetic field. This field can be visualized through field lines. Field Line Density: The density of these field lines determines the strength of the magnetic field. A region with closely spaced field lines indicates a stronger magnetic field than a region where they're spread out. Visualization of Field Lines: It's essential to understand and recognize the pattern of field lines around two bar magnets, especially when they have the same or opposite poles facing each other. Field Strength at Poles: The magnetic field is strongest at the poles of a magnet due to a higher concentration of field lines. Distance and Field Strength: The strength of the magnetic field diminishes as one moves farther from the magnet. Direction of Field Lines: Field lines emanate outward from the magnet's south pole and point inward toward the north pole. Magnetization Process: When a non-magnetized magnetic material becomes a magnet, the tiny regions within it called domains, which were initially oriented in random directions, align themselves to point uniformly in the same direction. Earth's Magnetic Properties: The Earth behaves like a large magnet. Interestingly, there appears to be a south-type magnetic pole near the Earth's geographic North Pole and a north-type magnetic pole near the Earth's geographic South Pole. Application in Devices: It would be beneficial to have a basic understanding of how magnets and magnetic fields operate within certain devices. Familiarize yourself with the structure and functioning of electric bells, relays, and circuit breakers, as they use these principles. With this foundational knowledge, you will be better prepared to delve deeper into the study of magnets and their wide-ranging applications. Each card features the element’s symbol, atomic number, and name – providing a clear and accessible entry point into the world of chemistry. The cards are designed to be used flexibly. You can print them twice to play Matching Pairs (also known as Memory®), where students turn over cards and try to find identical pairs. This helps improve concentration and recall while reinforcing students’ familiarity with element symbols and atomic numbers. What’s included: 118 cards (PDF format) – one for each chemical element Each card includes: element symbol, name, and atomic number Use them as a memory game (print twice) or flashcards for review Black-and-white format allows for optional color coding (e.g. element groups or states of matter) In my classroom: I’ve used this resource with grades 7–10, both during our unit on the periodic table and as a review activity. Some groups like to sort the cards by group or period before playing. Others enjoy using them competitively, seeing who can name the most elements based on symbol alone. There’s also room for differentiation: stronger students can work without a periodic table for support, while others use it alongside. The black-and-white version is copy-friendly and works well if you want students to color-code elements (e.g. metals vs. non-metals). You can also adapt the game for faster learners by having them group elements or research additional properties. This is a low-prep activity you can use again and again – whether as a center activity, partner task, or quick review before a test. Just print, cut, and play. 📍 Best wishes, Heike from @Lernfitness Did You Know? I teach with a certified therapy dog, and together we create a positive and welcoming learning environment. 🐶
