Decimal Numbers and their Names Card Sort Activity

Decimal Numbers and their Names – to Thousandths Learning to say a number’s proper name is an important step in understanding place value. When a student sees .1, it can be read it as “point 1” but does the student know what that means - that is represents “one tenth?” This material can be used as a card sort or memory game where the decimal number is matched to the corresponding place value name (e.g. “five tenths” and “.5” are a match). The purpose is to practice saying the decimal number’s name and be able to associate the words with the number. Encourage the student to read the number as if it were a whole number and then say the decimal place value of the last (right-most) number. For example, .25 would be read as “twenty five hundredths.” When adding whole numbers, remind students that the decimal point is read as “and.” For example, 2.13 would be read as “two and thirteen hundredths.” Material includes: • Decimal place value strips with numeric values and place value names (to be used as a reference for the card sort or memory game) • Three sets of differentiated number/name cards – each set is increasingly more challenging by adding another place value or whole numbers o Set 1: 15 numbers and corresponding name cards in tenths and hundredths places o Set 2: 15 numbers and corresponding name cards in hundredths and thousandths places o Set 3: 15 numbers and corresponding name cards with whole numbers and tenths, hundredths, and thousandths places o Two versions of each of the three sets is provided black and white colored – each set has a different color border • Recording sheet • Blank cards (a few extra cards for students to create their own numbers and write the names, or challenge a friend to do so) • Answer key Instructions The cards can be used for one of the activities below, or however you or your students imagine! This is an engaging and enjoyable memory game on plant parts and photosynthesis. Pupils work in teams of three or four. Each team lays out their 42 cards face down in a square and take it in turn to turn over two cards. If the cards are a question and its correct answer, the pupil keeps the pair. If they are not a match they are turned face down and the next pupil gets a turn. This process continues until all cards are matched and the winner is the pupil with the most pairs. If a team member thinks that the selectors pair is not a correct match, they can challenge. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer but the teacher also has a quick-check answer sheet. If the challenge is correct, the challenger keeps the pair. I Have Who Has is a class activity that is a student favorite. This set contains 36 cards with questions for squares of numbers, cubes of numbers, square roots of numbers and cube roots of numbers. It is a PDF file. I HAVE WHO HAS: PERFECT SQUARES AND CUBES Directions 1. Make a copy of the cards. You will only need one set to reuse for all of your classes. Use color paper and laminate if possible. (I had a set of I Have Who Has that were not laminated, used them for several years, and they held up well.) 2. Have students number 1 -36 on a piece of paper. 3. Mix up the cards and pass them out, one to each student. There are 36 cards so a few students might get two cards depending on your class size. 4. Any student can start with their WHO HAS. The student that has the value equivalent to the WHO HAS statement speaks up and says I HAVE ____ WHO HAS_____. (reading their card) Students will record the answer on their paper whether they have the card or not, trying to beat the person who has the card. Continue in this manner until you return to the starting card and they will then get to say their I HAVE. 5. I suggest having the cubes you don't expect the students to have memorized on the board (such as the cubes of 11 -15). You might even want to have a poster of those permanently on the wall. 6. I always made I HAVE WHO HAS a race for the class. If they could go through the cards in a certain amount of time they all got a piece of candy. I decreased the time allowed, as they got better. All students will have to speak clearly and loudly, listen, and stay focused to get through the cards in a set time. --great skills to practice in and of themselves ***** Make sure to count your cards after taking them back up from students. Even one missing card ruins the activity.********

Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Retell the passage’s key dates in order and explain what happened at each date. Describe how the passage shows baseball spreading to new places and continuing to change.
