Uses for these colouring sheets Use to help children learn the name of Foxgloves and to recognise them. Use as part of a science lesson on plants/flowers/pollinators (as bees love Foxgloves!) Paint or colour. Use to make greeting card The study of the natural world is the foundation for the later study of science. The colouring of pictures of natural things, be it plants or animals is more than a pastime activity. It is a means of familiarising young children with these everyday subjects. The colouring of this Foxglove picture can of course be used as a pastime, or even as part of a creative lesson - the picture looks super made into a greeting card of all kinds. But it has the potential to teach much more. The Curriculum for Science expects children to be taught to use the local environment to study plants and animals, throughout the year. What better than to use familiar subjects - such as Foxgloves which is sure to attract attention in summer with their large, bright pink flowers? The name alone gives cause for thought: fox-gloves? And insects, especially bees can be seen following the trail on the landing pad up into the 'bell' to find nectar. There's plenty to talk about! Colouring can help children to become familiar with the parts of the Foxglove plant and ask questions: What are the leaves like? Why is there a pattern on the flower? What is inside a berry? (the nectar). Why do the flowers need the insects to pollinate them? Colouring a picture of Foxgloves can also help children become familiar with the particular characteristics of a plant - its shape, colour, and special features, for example. It is best if children colour the Foxglove picture following close observation, from reference books, or after looking at Foxgloves in real life. see if you can find them growing in the vicinity of your home/school. A first decodable, informational, phonic reader about oak trees for those just taking off in reading. A simple 8-page book for the young child, or an older one with special needs. This book may contain words with the following sounds: ck, oo, ee, sh, ch, th, ng, ing, ar, or, a-e, i-e and u-e, ai, ea and oa. It can be enjoyed by any child who knows these phonic sounds. It is also part of the Reading Made Simple reading scheme. I created these phonic readers as I saw the huge need for highly structured, fun-to-read, early-reading books. They are very popular. I am an Early Years Specialist Teacher (B. Ed) who is currently tutoring children with profound special needs in reading and writing following over 30 years of teaching phonics. Main features: New vocabulary is repeated to aid fluency and build word recognition All the other words can be sounded out using the necessary phonic knowledge. Pictures do not encourage guessing Each book has been tested on children with severe special needs and those with none – all have loved them as they can read them! The PowerPoint has a useful shield to block off text until it is ready to be revealed and a marker to run under the text. Who can use these reading books? All beginner readers of any age and ability Struggling readers of all ages and abilities, including special needs pupils with severe dyslexia/other processing difficulties Teachers, parents, classroom assistants, private tutors - anyone who needs them! Are these phonic reading books and workbooks aligned with the UK Gov requirements or LETRS? Yes - totally. Though not part of an approved programme they are based on synthetic, very systematic phonics. They are highly structured, repeating vocabulary, introducing sight words slowly and introducing a-e words while practising those listed above that have been learned before. How long is this book? This Olympic Themed Editable Schedule Cards resource is a versatile one to use in your classroom, lunchroom or office. Each label has the Olympic circles all around the rectangle label. For every page, there are three labels included. There are three versions: blank, one with a script font “am” and “pm”, and one with a print font “am” and “pm”. Simply duplicate as many slides as you need, then type in your schedule, print them out and laminate them, add magnets or velcro, etc. Or just print them and laminate them so you can write on them with permanent or dry-erase marker. You can create your own Olympic themed schedule using these editable schedule cards. What makes these worksheets special? I have a powerful three-step process which I use with my special needs pupils, which is worked out over the course of the 23 worksheets: 1. See it!where we focus on becoming aware of the new sound in words. This involves first hearing the new sound in words and then seeing it in words (tracking). 2. Sound-it-out!Having learnt to see the new sound in words, we learn to sound out these words to read and write them. We begin by usingsound-it-out boxesfor reading and spelling which help the child to segment the word prior to blending the sounds together. Once the child can read and write individual words, we work on fluency by building familiarity with the common words in the new sound family. Once the child can sound the words out to read and spell confidently, we move on to recognising them/using them in longer reading and dictation passages, as soon as the child is able. I provide 2 reading passages with comprehension exercises and one dictation passage, with a page in the workbook dedicated to it, with room for a picture, which again cements understanding. 3. Write it! Incorporated into the above two steps, we constantly write the new sound. This adds a multi-sensory dimension to our work - we see with our eyes, we sound it with our mouth parts and voice, and then we move by writing. All three steps work together to help the child feel in control of his/her learning and to become a successful, confident learner. We finish each sound with a dictation which culminates our work before we move on to the next sound. I try to give the dictation a week after we finish the work on the EA sound to act as revision. The dictation: Read this passage to your pupil, who should write it. Have the child read his/her work and check for errors. Make sure the writing is completely accurate before saying the child has finished, including full stops and capital letters correctly used. Flashcards are included of some common EA words. This resource is a comprehensive lesson that uses 20 building-related vocabulary words. First off, you can introduce these words by using the PDF -based presentation. With the arrow keys, you just move from one word to another to make your students familiar with them. Next, You can hand out the vocabulary lists. Beware that these are made with color, so in order to be eco-friendly you might want to use black and white ink. Once the students have taken these lists home, they can do the vocabulary test in their next class. They can practice with the words by utilizing the included flash cards. These just need to be printed, laminated, and cut. Beware of sharp edges though. You can use the curved edges version to avoid annoying pinches. Finally, use the Wacky Words activity to have a really good time in class. With this, all the letters are mixed up. Students love this.
