TR Beginning Blends Worksheets A beginning blends worksheet to help teach 'TR', such as trip, trap and trunk etc... Beginning blends are often tricky to learn, especially for children with a processing difficulty, such as dyslexia. By targeting the individual blends, children can be helped over this stage of phonic learning, so crucial for further success in reading and spelling. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the TR initial blend. What does the worksheet involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then complete words by adding the letters 'tr'. They then read the words they have made and write them under the pictures. They are then given six more words to make by writing 'tr' in the spaces. Once read, the child must look for the words in the grid. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although it is strongly suggested that an adult works with those children with special needs for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of beginning blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. I will use flashcards - a time-honoured, efficient method of teaching, to help them become familiar with the blends, asking them to both read and write the blends. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as possible, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature, they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils.

A phonic CVC Words Reading Book for young/SEN/ESL readers. This is the thirteenth of 16 phonic reading books to support the blending of CVC words with a short vowel sound, suitable for those who just beginning to read with phonics. These books are intended to be read in sequence for best effect. These books focus exclusively on sounding out words and they only use the key sight (red/tricky) words a, is, the, of, which are introduced only gradually. These short words should be learned on a flashcard first, but are best put into context as soon as possible when children usually, quickly pick them up. Pictures are deliberately minimal to encourage the child to gain meaning from the text and not to guess. All of the words are introduced and then met again in subsequent readers, to help develop confidence and fluency. The book s begins with just a few words being introduced. For example, the book CVC Reading Book 13 uses the words it, doll, picnic, cup, etc. The whole scope and sequence is included in the pack for your reference. Each book lists the sight word/s being used in that book at the beginning. There is also a short introduction to the book to be read by the teacher and discussed with the child. These introductions help to make up for the lack of words in the book and help parents and teachers to have a basis for discussion with the child, so aiding reading comprehension. I have based the stories around loveable characters with whom the children quickly identify: farmer Tom with his animals, his wife, his son Sam and daughter, Pam, his dog, Jiff and the cat. Due to the systematic, phonetic nature of these books, they are highly suitable for special needs children who have failed with other programmes. Many parents have told me they wished they had found these books sooner, or had found them at all, as they would have been ideal for their struggling reader. They have been thoroughly tested by my current pupils all of whom are boys. Even my nine-year old boy pupil loves them. They can also be used with young EFL/ESL learners.

CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: A

Here is a simple game to help children learn to read CVC words with the medial sound A. This game will help your child to learn to blend three-letter words with the short vowel ‘a’. That means, to put sounds together to make a word. The child has to be able to feel and hear the word that is being sounded out. This game is supplied in both colour and black and white - you choose how you print! We suggest laminating the pieces for durability. Who is the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: A for? Those who are just beginning to sound out/blend CVC words with the A short vowel sound. These may be: Young learners Special needs learners ESL/EFL learners of any age. Who can use the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: A? Parents Homeschoolers/home educators Teachers in class, or for use in centers Those involved in intervention work Private tutors How can the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: A be used? It can be played as a game for 2 players It can be used as a matching activity for individual pupils It can be used for assessment purposes To make the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: A Simply print out the two baseboards. Print out the word cards and cut them up. Teach your pupil to take care of the cards and not bend them more than can be helped. To play the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: A Take a base board each. Scatter the word cards face down. Take it in turns to take a word card. Read it. If it matches a picture on your baseboard, place it in the correct space. If not, return it to the pool of cards. Play continues until someone completes their board, or until all the cards are used up. Teaching tips: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your turn and invite your pupil’s help when it is your turn, so s/he gets even more practice.
