The 5-4-3-2-1 Classroom Desk Edition is the ultimate resource for teachers to help their students relieve anxiety, manage the stress of testing, and develop better focus in class. Do you need an evidence-based, effective method to help students, manage anxiety, combat test stress, and improve focus on work? Use the Mindfulness and Somatic Grounding Classroom Desk Edition. This no-fuss curriculum helps teachers help their students through the unique challenges of middle school. In a traditional middle school, there are limited opportunities for students to use mindfulness in a private manner that does not draw attention to themselves. The Mindfulness and Somatic Grounding Classroom Desk Edition is a trauma-sensitive, neurobiologically accurate best practice that provides students with a method to use at their desks that will not call attention to them or make them feel conspicuous. The framework is based on the well-known 5-4-3-2-1 sensory method. By providing instructions for using the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory method at their desks, you will create a space for your students that can serve as an anchor of calmness and safety. The toolkit is a perfect fit for school counselors, homeroom teachers, and any teacher interested in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). Everything you need to know to successfully teach this practice to your students is included in the toolkit! Here is a breakdown of the 43-page document: Part 1: Educator's Guide and Methodology: We go deep into an adolescent’s brain and how anxiety and their brain function. This will identify the reasons that this method works so that you have the professional knowledge to effectively teach it to students. The report contains case studies and the correct method of implementation. Part 2: 10-Worksheet Student Workbook: The student workbook is practical, interesting and beautifully produced to help guide all students through mastering the technique of Sensory Mapping. The worksheets are progressive in approach to build upon each of the skills necessary to master the technique (for example, from basic sensory mapping to “stealth” self-regulation in social situations and adapting the method of self-regulation for different environments—e.g., the library, science laboratory or assemblies). Part 3: Visuals and Educator Resources: a. Professional visuals—printable diagrams and mind maps that will allow you to visually represent Sensory Mapping to your students (ideal for use as classroom posters or in interactive notebooks); b. Scripts for Educators to teach the new technique to students in the classroom, both to the entire class and to individuals; c. Troubleshooting Guide (advice on what to do when students resist or have challenges with this approach); d. Section-by-section answer keys and educator notes to make it easy for you to assess and assist your students with each of the student worksheets. Assist your students in transitioning from the “fight or flight” response to the “rest and learn” mode by providing them with a self-regulation tool that they can use throughout their lives . Keywords: Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Mindfulness for Kids, Somatic Grounding, 5-4-3-2-1 Technique, Anxiety Management, Classroom Management, Middle School, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, Test Anxiety, Focus, Self-Regulation, Trauma-Informed, Calm Down Corner, School Counselors, Printable Workbook, Digital Resource. Why School Systems and Parents Appreciate It: Low-Key and Without Stigma: This program lets students secretly control their anxiety with no attention drawn to themselves at their desks. Thus there is no social stigma attached to using an obvious 'calm down' tool or leaving the class to manage anxiety, which many adolescents are concerned about. Empowers Students: By learning how to ‘hack’ their own nervous system instead of relying on an adult to help them stop escalating to an explosive state, students are developing a coping strategy that gives them a tangible skill as well as a sense of control over their emotional state. Based on Evidence and Academics: The approach is based on established research from neurobiology and somatic psychology (the study of the amygdala hijack); therefore, both educators and students view the program in an academically serious manner because of the sophistication of the content but the simplicity of delivery. Comprehensive and Easy to Implement: This program is a comprehensive, use-ready package that includes a thorough description of the concepts, required materials, instructions for the teacher, illustrations, and complete answer keys. A busy educator could implement this program successfully with no problems at all. Addresses a Significant Need: With the increasing number of students suffering from anxiety in school, this program will help educators to address a significant need by providing a practical, efficient, and non-intrusive method to help students be present and able to learn. Target Audience: Content for Primary Target: The content of this resource is specifically targeting the primary target audience with specific and thorough data supporting it. Primary Target: Students in 6th-8th Grade (Middle School). The PDF provides information about this group consistently within the context of their neurological and social challenges they face (e.g. Synaptic Pruning, Social Camouflage, Peer Evaluation). The attached case studies/examples of two students, Julian and Maya, who are in the 8th and 6th grades, respectively and consistent with this audience. The worksheet difficulties are completely appropriate for this age group. Secondary Target: Students in 9th-10th Grade: Older readers with test anxiety or social anxiety will find this resource extremely useful. School Counselors, Psychologists and Therapists: This resource is an excellent Tier 1 (whole-class) and Tier 2 (individual/small group) intervention for school employed mental health providers. Special Education Teachers: This resource will provide an excellent tool to assist students who need a structured, concrete, sensory approach to learning self-regulation. Entirely "Ready to Go" and requires no prep time (40 pages of theory, 10 Scenario Worksheets, visual aids, answer keys and individualised teacher guides). Print once and immediatley begin teaching. Relevance with Real Life: Addresses current adolescent issues such as cyber boundaries, tracking locations, group chat pressure, love bombing and smear campaigns through engaging, appropriate, context sensitive scenarios. Demonstrated Skill-Building: Transition from theory to practice using scripting, somatic awareness and mastery reflections, creating measurable improvement in assertiveness and self-esteem. Flexible and Scalable (can be used by teachers in whole classes, small groups, individually or as independent study). Can be adapted from Middle School up to High School. Target Student Grade Levels: The curriculum is intended for students in grades 6 through 12 (middle and high school) as well as for teachers implementing it in classrooms. This is reflected in the Teacher Implementation Guide, sections beginning on pages 39-40, with examples of differentiation for middle schoolers and high schoolers as described below: For middle schoolers (grades 6-8), examples are provided, emphasizing peer relationships and how those relationships can lead to digital exclusion, as well as using a scripted role-playing activity. For high schoolers (grades9-12), the focus is on the complexities/differences of exploring nuances, emotional manipulation, gaslighting, intimate partner relationships, and the interconnectedness of digital technologies. The curriculum can be effectively used in Health, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Advisory, Psychology, Counseling, Life Skills, and Advisory/Homeroom classes, as well as in after school programming, by school counselors, through families who are homeschooling, and by youth groups. Transform Student Stress into Focused Success with Science-Backed Breathwork! Are your high school students struggling with test anxiety, overwhelming stress, and an inability to focus? It's not just in their heads—it's in their biology. The modern academic landscape puts the adolescent nervous system in a constant state of "fight or flight," hijacking their ability to learn and perform. Introducing the Advanced Breathwork Patterns for Vagal Tone Curriculum —a revolutionary, science-based toolkit designed to empower students to take conscious control of their own physiology. This isn't just another mindfulness exercise; it's an applied neurobiology lesson that provides tangible, immediate results. This comprehensive 44-page digital PDF package moves beyond simple "calm down" instructions. It introduces Haptic Respiratory Pacing , a powerful method combining specific breathing protocols (like Box Breathing and the Physiological Sigh) with the kinesthetic act of tracing. This dual-coding mechanism anchors a student's focus, interrupts anxiety loops, and directly stimulates the vagus nerve to manually lower heart rate and calm the nervous system. What's Inside This Complete, "Done-For-You" Curriculum? PHASE 1: Core Content & Theory (Educator/Student Guide): A deep dive into the "why" behind the techniques. This section explains the neurobiology of the stress response, the vagus nerve, and the mechanics of Box Breathing and the Physiological Sigh in clear, scientific terms. Perfect for engaging skeptical teens who want to know how it works. PHASE 2: Student Workbook (10 Rigorous Worksheets): A series of in-depth worksheets that blend academic learning with kinetic practice. Students will map neurobiological pathways, analyze data from their own heart rate, and apply these techniques to real-world scenarios like test-taking and athletic performance. PHASE 3: Visuals & Teacher Resources: High-Fidelity Tracing Diagrams: Clean, printable visual guides for Box Breathing and the Physiological Sigh that students can trace with a finger or pen. Comprehensive Answer Key: A full answer key for every question in the student workbook, including model answers for open-ended questions. Rigorous Teacher Implementation Guide: A step-by-step guide on how to frame the lesson ("Hacking the Nervous System"), run a baseline data protocol to get student buy-in, and integrate the curriculum into different subjects. Trauma-Informed Considerations: Expert guidance on how to apply these techniques safely and effectively for all students. Empower your students with a lifelong skill to manage stress, improve focus, and master their emotional state. Download this resource today and bring the power of applied neuroscience into your classroom! Keywords: Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Stress Management, Anxiety Reduction, Test Anxiety, High School, Biology, Health, PE, School Counselor, Mindfulness, Breathwork, Vagus Nerve, Box Breathing, Physiological Sigh, Self-Regulation, Coping Skills, Neurobiology, Focus, Student Workbook, Digital Download, Printable. Why Parents/Schools Love It: Empowers Students with a Real-World Skill: This isn't just theory. It gives teens a practical, discreet tool they can use anywhere—before an exam, during a stressful social situation, or on the athletic field—to manage their own anxiety and improve performance. Science-Backed & Data-Driven: The curriculum is grounded in real neurobiology, not abstract concepts. The included activities that have students measure their own heart rate provide concrete proof that the techniques work, ensuring high student engagement and buy-in. Guided Reading Level H - Clean Hands, Healthy Bodies
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Health, P.E. & Health, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Resources, Life Skills, Science, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments
This Guided Reading Book - Clean Hands, Healthy Bodies (Level H) includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Clean Hands, Healthy Bodies Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Health & Safety / Science Primary Topic: When and how to wash hands to stop germs Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): H What This Book Teaches Best Why washing hands matters: it “keeps germs away” and helps prevent germs from spreading to other people. When to wash hands (before eating, after outdoor play, after using the toilet, after playing with a pet). How to wash hands step-by-step (wet with clean running water, use soap, scrub all areas, rinse, dry). A key procedure detail: scrubbing should last “twenty seconds” to remove germs. The idea of healthy habits: making handwashing a regular habit “protects everyone.” Learning Goals Students will explain one reason the book gives for washing hands, using a detail from the text. Students will identify at least two times the book says hands should be washed. Students will describe the steps for washing hands in order, based on the text. Students will state how long scrubbing should last, according to the book. Students will describe how handwashing helps other people, using the book’s words about spreading germs/protecting everyone. Key Vocabulary From the Text germs — tiny living things that can make you sick. contact — touching something. invisible — cannot be seen. scrub — rub hard to get something clean. protects — keeps safe from harm. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: When do you think it is most important to wash your hands? Comprehension questions: Name one time the book says you should wash your hands. How long should scrubbing last when you wash your hands? Why does washing your hands help other people? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership.
