This visual third grade math diagnostic identifies strengths, skill gaps, and readiness across 14 essential strands—then connects results directly to targeted follow-up practice. With 39 questions covering place value, operations, multiplication and division foundations, fractions, graphs, and more, this resource helps you move from assess → analyze → group → reteach . What’s Included This third grade math assessment bundle provides a complete beginning-of-year diagnostic system: ✅ 39-question Student Math Assessment ✅ 14 essential math skill strands ✅ Clear, visual student-friendly layout ✅ Complete answer key for all 39 questions ✅ Teacher “what to look for” notes ✅ Common-error and misconception guidance ✅ 39-point scoring system ✅ Secure, Developing, and Emerging score bands ✅ One-page quick-grading answer grid ✅ Step-by-step administration guide ✅ Individual student scoring sheet ✅ Whole-class tracking grid ✅ Small-group planning guidance ✅ Standards alignment ✅ Reteaching roadmap ✅ 14 targeted follow-up practice pages ✅ Fresh practice problems different from assessment items ✅ Teacher answer strip for every practice page The answer key includes correct responses plus brief teacher notes designed to turn student errors into useful instructional information. How It Works in the Classroom Use this Grade 3 beginning of year math assessment during the first week or two of school to see which second-grade skills students bring into third grade. There is no time limit, and the assessment can be split into two shorter sittings. Students can show their thinking through regrouping marks, arrays, jottings, and number lines. Use this resource for: ⭐ Beginning-of-year math assessment ⭐ Back-to-school math diagnostic ⭐ Third grade math pre-assessment ⭐ Second-grade skills review ⭐ Small-group planning ⭐ Math intervention ⭐ Skill-based differentiation ⭐ Targeted reteaching ⭐ Independent follow-up practice ⭐ Student support planning After scoring, transfer results to the individual student sheet and whole-class tracking grid. The grid organizes performance across all 14 strands, helping you quickly spot shared needs and form skill-based groups. Then print only the follow-up practice pages each student or group needs. Part 4 includes one focused worksheet for every assessed strand, with fresh problems rather than repeated assessment questions. Standards & Learning Goals This third grade math diagnostic assessment checks readiness across 14 essential strands: 🔢 Place value to 1,000 ⚖️ Comparing three-digit numbers ➕ Multi-digit addition ➖ Multi-digit subtraction 📖 Word problems ✖️ Foundations of multiplication ➗ Foundations of division 💰 Money and change 🕒 Telling time and elapsed time 📏 Measurement 📊 Bar graphs ⭐ Picture graphs 🔷 2D and 3D shapes 🍕 Fractions as equal parts Students work with base-ten blocks, expanded form, digit value, comparing and ordering numbers, regrouping, one-step and two-step word problems, arrays, equal groups, repeated addition, equal sharing, money, change, analog clocks, elapsed time, rulers, scaled graphs, shape attributes, and fractions of wholes and sets. The included standards map provides illustrative Grade 2–3 Common Core references, including: 2.NBT.A.1 2.NBT.A.4 2.NBT.B.7 3.NBT.A.1–2 2.OA.A.1 2.OA.C.4 3.OA.A.1–2 3.OA.D.8 2.MD.A.1 2.MD.C.7–8 2.MD.D.10 3.MD.A.1 3.MD.B.3–4 2.G.A.1 2.G.A.3 3.G.A.1 3.NF.A.1 Because a beginning-of-year Grade 3 diagnostic naturally checks end-of-second-grade mastery and readiness for third-grade content, the alignment intentionally spans both grade levels. Why Teachers Love It ✨ See more than a total score. Results are broken down by skill strand for clearer instructional decisions. ✨ Save valuable planning time. The answer key, quick-grading grid, scoring sheet, and class tracker simplify your assessment workflow. ✨ Build purposeful small groups. Group students by shared needs instead of relying only on overall scores. ✨ Spot important misconceptions. Teacher notes help identify place-value confusion, regrouping errors, operation mistakes, and misunderstandings about equal groups. ✨ Check multiplication and division understanding early. Questions use arrays, repeated addition, sharing, and grouping—not only memorized facts. ✨ Differentiate without hunting for extra worksheets. Print the specific follow-up page each student or group needs. ✨ Use a truly actionable class tracker. The whole-class grid on page 4 displays all 14 strands side by side, making clusters of shared needs easier to identify for small-group planning. ✨ Move directly from assessment to reteaching. Practice pages cover place value, comparing, regrouping, word problems, multiplication, division, money, time, measurement, graphs, shapes, and fractions. Start the year knowing what your students understand and what they need next. Download this Grade 3 beginning of year math assessment to assess readiness, identify learning gaps, form targeted small groups, and provide focused follow-up practice from one coordinated resource. Perfect for teachers searching for a third grade math pre-assessment , back-to-school math diagnostic, Grade 3 readiness assessment, second-grade skills review, math intervention tool, or beginning-of-year math assessment with built-in scoring and reteaching support.

Flashlights Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia

Flashlights Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Science, Technology, Language Development, Social Studies, History, Pre-Reading, Physics, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans

This Flashlights reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Flashlights Genre: Nonfiction (Informational Text) Subject: Science (Technology/Physical Science) / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: Flashlight parts, history, and how it works Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): P What This Lesson Teaches Best Explains the main parts inside a flashlight (a power source, a switch, and a reflector) and what they do. Teaches a short history of flashlights , including the “dry cell” battery and an 1899 U.S. patent for a hand-held electric light. Shows cause and effect : early zinc-carbon batteries tired quickly, so the light came in short flashes—leading to the name “flashlight.” Compares how flashlight beams improved over time, from sputtering light to steadier beams, including incandescent bulbs and later LEDs. Connects electricity to a real object by describing how a click of the switch completes a circuit so electricity can flow. Learning Goals Students will describe what a flashlight carries “in one hand” and what it helps people do in the dark. Students will identify three parts inside a flashlight case and explain each part’s job using the passage. Students will explain why the flashlight got its name, using evidence about early batteries and short flashes. Students will describe how flashlight lighting changed over time (dry cell batteries, incandescent bulbs, LEDs). Students will explain what happens when a flashlight switch is clicked, based on how the circuit is completed. Key Vocabulary From the Text reflector — shiny part that gathers glow and pushes it forward. patent — legal protection for an invention. incandescent — a kind of bulb that makes light using heat. LEDs — bright lights that can shine longer on same power. circuit — complete path that lets electricity flow. FULL CATALOG OF DOWNLOAD LINKS AND ENCYCLOPEDIA INDEX HERE

Looking for something more than just a “piggy bank” way to teach your students about finances? The curriculum is designed specifically to teach students how and why they can create wealth through investing. It breaks down stocks and stock markets into simple components, demonstrates how inflation erodes purchasing power without anyone being aware, and mathematically proves the power of compounding through real-life practice examples. Students will develop a firm understanding of investing based upon the learning experiences included in this program, which can be used for multiple subject areas including Math, Economics, Personal Finance, and Life Skills. This is an excellent resource for several weeks of instruction on investment literacy as it provides all of the necessary ingredients (theory, practice, and case studies) to achieve successful learning outcomes. WHAT WILL YOU FIND IN THIS 32-PAGE PACK? PHASE ONE: Core content and theory – This section includes a 9-page “student textbook” that communicates the foundational concepts using academic terminology, generalized real-world analogies where applicable. Covers the following topics: The reality of inflation; the asset classes (i.e., stocks, bonds reals); the difference between simple versus compound interest; the Rule of 72; risk and diversification; behavioral finance (e.g., loss aversion, fear-of-missing-out [FOMO]); and dollar-cost-averaging. PHASE TWO: Student workbook (10 sheets) - A total of 13 pages worth of rigorous practice questions. Starting with simple terminology and building to an increasingly sophisticated portfolio synthesis. Worksheet #1 – The anatomy of an investment. Worksheet #2 –The time-value-of-money and inflation. Worksheet #3 – Simple versus compound interest. Worksheet #4 – The compound-interest formula in action. Worksheet #5 – The Rule of 72. Worksheet #6 – Risk, reward, and volatility. Worksheet #7 – Stock-market mechanics. Worksheet #8 – Mutual funds and ETFs. Worksheet #9 – The impact of time (early vs. late). Worksheet #10 – Building your first portfolio. PHASE THREE: Visual and teacher resources – Everything you need to properly teach and support your students on the curriculum. 3 impactful pedagogical visuals that can be projected and/or printed relating to compound interest, asset classes, and the Rule of 72. Complete, step-by-step Teacher’s Answer Key covering all ten questions in the workbook. Sound implementation guide for Teachers, including module pacing, instructional notes, and other valuable insights related to “expected cognitive friction points.” This isn't simply a lesson plan; This is an entire educational program that will teach young people to have real financial intelligence. Key Terms: Teach Teenagers How to Invest, Compound Interest Project, Financial Literacy Curriculum, Personal Financial Literacy Unit, Stock Market For Kids, Middle School Math, High School Economics, Homeschooling, No Preparation Needed (Print and Go), Digital Learning, and Money Management. Why Do Parents and Schools Appreciate It? Provides Life-Long Knowledge: This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand investing, create wealth, and achieve financial stability beyond what they learned in textbooks. Total Unit; No Additional Preparation Needed: This is a complete curriculum with everything needed, including theory, worksheets, visuals, answer keys, and a teacher guide! By using this complete package, more than 10-20 hours of planning can be saved by teachers. Real Comprehension: By combining theory with real-life examples and thorough practice, this unit gives students the knowledge they need to know how to calculate for financial growth and what risks are associated with financial growth rather than just memorizing formulas to solve for financial growth. Engaging as well as Challenging: The language in this unit is challenging, but when students use the step-by-step format and apply these concepts to real-life examples (like comparing two different investors), students will find these topics very interesting and easy to understand. Target Student Audience Assessment: A comprehensive assessment of the material's content and language, mathematical difficulty, etc.: Grade Level of Main Target Audience: 8 - 10 grades. Although the PDF shows 7-9 grades, the vocabulary/academic terminology in the document is more suitable to eighth (8th) & ninth (9th) graders (as opposed to seventh (7th) graders). Guided Reading Level L - Solids, Liquids, and Gases

Guided Reading Level L - Solids, Liquids, and Gases
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Science, Pre-Reading, Language Development, Physics, Grade 1, 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments

This Guided Reading Book - Solids, Liquids, and Gases (Level L) includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Solids, Liquids, and Gases Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Science (Physical Science) Primary Topic: States of matter and how they change Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): L What This Book Teaches Best Defines matter as anything that takes up space and has mass, made of tiny particles including atoms and molecules. Explains the three primary states of matter— solid, liquid, gas —and links each state to how closely particles are packed and how much energy they have. Describes key properties of each state (solids have definite shape/volume; liquids have definite volume but no fixed shape; gases have neither and expand to fill containers). Shows how heat/energy changes states (melting, freezing, evaporation at boiling point, and condensation into droplets). Connects science ideas to observable examples (liquids flow downward, gases can be compressed with pressure, dew as an example of condensation). Learning Goals Define matter using the book’s description (takes up space and has mass). Describe how particle spacing and energy relate to whether matter is a solid, liquid, or gas. Compare solids, liquids, and gases by shape and volume using details from the text. Explain what happens to particles when a solid is heated enough to melt into a liquid. Explain evaporation as described in the book when a liquid reaches its boiling point. Explain condensation as described in the book when a gas cools into droplets of liquid. Key Vocabulary From the Text matter — anything that takes up space and has mass. particles — tiny pieces everything is made of. molecules — very tiny groups of atoms that make up matter. evaporation — when a liquid changes into a gas. condensation — when a gas cools and turns into tiny drops of liquid. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What are some things you think could be solids, liquids, or gases? Comprehension questions: What does the book say matter is? Comprehension questions: How does the book describe the particles inside a solid? Comprehension questions: According to the book, what is condensation? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership.
