Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Students are shown three unique and realistic graphs Each one presents information in a biased or misleading way. With step-by-step instructions, your students will be guided through the basics: 1) Carefully reading and interpreting each graph: the axes, the scales, the data that is included 2) Noticing any biases or manipulations that may be present 3) Determining what the author probably wanted to guide them to think when reading the initial graph On the second page for each situation, students are given extra information and tasked with re-creating the graph more fairly. Blank graphs (with scales and labels) are given to students; they will use the information provided in each table to create a new graph that displays the data in an accurate way. Reflection prompt questions are also included to stimulate discussion and students explaining their ideas in words. The misleading and biased scenarios include: Choosing a truncated vertical scale to overemphasize change Not plotting enough data points for the full picture Graphing an absolute amount when a rate would be more informative The three graphs include one bar graph and two line graphs. This _ND Endigns decodable reading book is the 11th book in a series that can help children with special needs pupils develop reading fluency. Each book comes with a matching PowerPoint making it suitable for use in a range of settings. The Jack Stories, of which this book is one, introduces one phonic sound at a time, and subsequent books build on the vocabulary of the books before, constantly revising and reviewing learned sounds. What makes this phonic reading programme for special needs different? · It has its own, easy-to-download and print phonic reading books, making it accessible to many children worldwide. · Each book carefully builds on the vocabulary of those that have gone before, providing much repetition, without relying on predictable text. · Pictures aid the storyline without encouraging reading from the pictures – i.e. guessing. · The vocabulary is based on phonic families, which are introduced in a carefully planned way. · True sight words – those that cannot be sounded out - are kept to the very minimum. Most words are introduced in their phonic family wherever possible. · It is truly multisensory, using the power of the hand. We not only look at the words, but we write them too. The Phonics Advantage Progressive Emergent Reader Books slowly progress in the number of words on the page, number of words in a sentence, and the number of sentences on a page. The emergent readers reinforce sight-word vocabulary and word families. Great care was taken to use small decodable words, and to review words from earlier stories. These emergent readers are formatted for easy reading on student’s digital devices. They can also be read on all computer screens, and be presented on white boards for whole-class reading experiences. The emergent readers can be downloaded to student’s digital devices, emailed to student’s homes, or posted on a class website that is password protected and open to your classroom only. This download is for the 20 emergent readers in Level 1. Level 1 is mostly themed books written with small decodable words with one or two short sentences on each page. The product is a zip file containing four PDF files, each having five emergent readers. For subject diversity, each PDF of five emergent readers contains a book on animals (pets, hamsters, spiders, horses), a trip (trip on a ship, Niagara Falls, a hike, a trip to the library), and something to do (plant flowers, make soup, create coffee-filter butterflies). The twenty books in Level 1 are the first part of an early reading series. Level 2 comes in two parts: Books 1 – 15 and Books 16 – 30. Level 2 is a mixture of themed books and short stories. Level 2 has two to three sentences per page. Like Level 1, Level 2 focuses on word families, small decodable words, and common word wall words.
