The kids knew that food came from the grocery store, but they had no idea about all the steps it takes to get food from the farm to their plates. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like farm, plant, grow, harvest, pack, ship, store, market, grocery store, cook, and eat . I also included a few like "farmer" and "produce" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "harvest" (it's a tricky one) or whether a farmer is the same as a rancher (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a farm-to-table chart or a simple flowchart of the process nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the steps in order . Data and Graphing in Technology word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this data and graphing in technology puzzle set for my 4th graders during our STEM and math unit. The kids could collect data but had no idea what words like spreadsheet, chart, or graph meant when we used computers to show information. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like data, graph, chart, spreadsheet, table, sort, filter, compare, label, and explain. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the technology data vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a chart and a graph are the same thing. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple computer, bar graph, and pie chart drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers make a simple chart using data from the class on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like discuss, question, opinion, agree, disagree, connection, predict, and summarize. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the book club vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether it's okay to disagree in a book club. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple talking faces, speech bubble, and book drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one question they would ask in a book club on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Tide Pool Science word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this tide pool science puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our ocean and marine ecosystems unit. The kids were fascinated by the small pools of water left behind when the tide goes out, but they had no idea what words like intertidal zone , adaptation , or desiccation meant . They kept mixing up the zones of the rocky shore and couldn't remember which animals lived where . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like tide pool, high tide, low tide, intertidal, barnacle, mussel, sea star, anemone, urchin, hermit crab, limpet, chiton, algae, plankton, predator, prey, adapt, camouflage, exoskeleton, tentacle, tube feet, desiccation, salinity, oxygen, and space . The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of desiccation or whether a sea star and a starfish are the same thing (they are, but the kids always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a simple diagram of the intertidal zones and pictures of the animals nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see which creatures live where . Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one tide pool animal from the puzzles and draw a picture showing one adaptation that helps it survive on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
