Multicultural Family Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this multicultural family vocabulary puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our social studies and family unit. The kids could talk about their own families but had no idea what words like multicultural, tradition, or celebrate meant when we shared stories about different family customs. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like family, culture, tradition, celebrate, language, food, music, name, story, and country. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a tradition has to be the same every year. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple family, globe, and heart drawings but nothing too busy. Works for K through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw their family and label one tradition on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

US State Birds word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this US state birds puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our geography unit. The kids could name a few state birds like the cardinal and the robin, but they had no idea that the northern cardinal is the state bird of seven states or that some states have a chicken as their official bird. They also kept mixing up which bird belonged to which state, so I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using a list of state birds, including the northern cardinal (state bird of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia), the western meadowlark (Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming), and the northern mockingbird (Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas) . I also made sure to include a few unique ones like the yellowhammer of Alabama, the nēnē of Hawaii, the willow ptarmigan of Alaska, and the roadrunner of New Mexico because they always spark good conversations . The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a roadrunner is actually a bird or if the blue hen chicken really counts (it does, and the kids always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've looked at a map of state symbols. I added a couple simple cardinal, meadowlark, and mockingbird drawings but nothing too busy. World Capitals word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this world capitals puzzle set for my 4th graders during our geography unit. The kids could name a few countries but had no idea what their capitals were or that every country has one. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Washington DC, Ottawa, Mexico City, Brasilia, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Nairobi, Pretoria, Beijing, Tokyo, New Delhi, Canberra, and Moscow. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the capitals finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether Sydney or Canberra is the capital of Australia. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple star and globe drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers list five country-capital pairs from memory on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Here is a fun thematic mathematics lesson for your students in grades 4-6. They will use lots of math skills as they plan and "shop" for Valentine's Day items for their friends. Here's how it works: The teacher shows the class the four items they can shop for (erasers, pop-its, chocolate, notepads). Each item is a different price point from $0.60 to $1.25. Students think of how many kids there are in their class. The teacher gives each student a budget (they can all be the same or you can assign different budgets to easily differentiate this lesson). Students have to buy at least one item for each student in their class but not go over budget! The lesson walks students through the process step-by-step: There is a planning page where they can do rough calculations, try out different combinations, and change their minds. Encourage students NOT to rush through this part. There is a simple spreadsheet where students put their final plan and calculate the exact cost to ensure they have stayed within budget. There is a poster page for students to sketch exactly what they are going to buy and show the final price. There is a reflection page for students to answer some deeper thinking questions and explain their mathematical thinking in words. How to Use: I would recommend projecting the PDF pages on your interactive whiteboard and walking students through a sample budget first. Especially show them how to use the spreadsheet (and multiply) to figure out the total cost. Grades to Use With: This product is designed for students in grades 4-6, especially those who are working on learning decimal operations. It could also be used in middle school or high school special education classes. Grade 7 World Cultures word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this world cultures puzzle set for my 7th graders during our geography and social studies unit. The kids knew a little about different countries, but they had no idea what words like cultural diffusion, ethnocentric, or standard of living meant when we started comparing how people live around the world . They also kept mixing up the different types of economies and governments. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like culture, cultural diffusion, cultural trait, society, social structure, government, democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, economy, market economy, command economy, traditional economy, standard of living, ethnicity, diversity, urbanization, and globalization . I also threw in a few like "indigenous" and "ethnocentric" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "ethnocentric" (it's a tricky one) or whether a command economy and a market economy are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a list of vocabulary definitions nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the concepts. Works for 6th through 7th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one example of cultural diffusion they've seen in their own lives on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
