Learning objectives

Students will read two informational passages about car mechanics and cars, then answer literal comprehension questions (who/what/why) about each (pages 2-6).
Students will identify and use vocabulary for car parts, both by labeling a diagram and by writing a short story using at least four of the terms (pages 7-9).
Students will practice supporting fine-motor, vocabulary, and creative-writing skills through a word search, acrostic poem, tracing, and pattern-completion activity (pages 11-14).
Students will reflect in writing on why they would want to be a car mechanic and what the job would involve (page 18).

Teaching tips

Do not print page 1; the file itself instructs printing from page 2 onward to avoid wasting paper and ink.
Because the packet spans reading-comprehension pages (2-6) and much simpler tracing/coloring pages (14-16), assign individual pages to match each student's level rather than the whole packet in sequence.
Have students complete the Parts of a Car diagram (page 7) before the Car Writing Prompt (page 8), since the writing task explicitly asks them to reuse at least four words from that diagram.
Use the Car Mechanic Application (page 18) as a wrap-up reflection after the reading and vocabulary pages, once students have learned what the job actually involves.

How are the two reading passages connected to the rest of the packet?

Each passage has its own comprehension page right after it -- the first passage pairs with a close-read annotation page and a 5-question reading response, and the second pairs with a 3-question reading response -- so the reading and the practice questions are grouped together rather than separated.
