This ancient Rome reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. The movie is based on a classical music album of the same name and tells the story of a young boy named Christoph (played by Illya Woloshyn), who lives in Vienna, Austria during the 1800s. One day, Christoph's mother takes in a new tenant, who turns out to be the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven (played by Neil Munro). Christoph is initially irritated by Beethoven's odd and grumpy behavior, but eventually becomes fascinated with the composer's music and begins to understand the genius behind it. As Christoph spends more time with Beethoven, he learns about the composer's struggles with deafness, poverty, and loneliness. Christoph also witnesses Beethoven's creative process and how he channels his emotions and experiences into his music. Throughout the movie, Christoph and Beethoven's relationship grows and they develop a deep respect for each other. Christoph helps Beethoven to hear his music by playing it on the piano, and Beethoven inspires Christoph to pursue his own dreams of becoming a musician. In the end, Beethoven moves out of Christoph's house, but leaves him with a gift - a manuscript for his latest symphony. Christoph plays the symphony with an orchestra and realizes the beauty and power of Beethoven's music. In this resource, you will get 24 different stempathy scenarios. Stempathy is STEM plus Empathy combined. For this activity, you will need Legos or the generic brand (which is cheaper). I purchased 2000 for 24-25 students to get their own bag or box of bricks. Each scenario includes a child relatable problem plus discussion questions about how someone is feeling and why solving the problem is important. Since there are 24 scenarios, you can give everyone in your class one of them and give them their own set of Lego bricks or generic bricks. This resource can also be used for centers, group work, or partner tasks. Each student also can have a worksheet (included) which prompts them to answer the discussion questions and draft a design of their solution. Students can combine creativity and empathy in this resource. Some of the scenarios are; a person is in a wheelchair and there are stairs during a fire drill, a dog is not longer able to jump up into the car, a person gets too distracted in class and needs a quieter space, the local food bank is short on veggies and fruits and needs a structure to growth fresh produce, a person is often disorganized and loses their supplies and homework and needs an organizing system, students need a structure to protect them from the hot sun and wet rain, and many more. If you teach STEM or SEL classes, this is a great way to have a multidisciplinary lesson that is hands on, engaging, and fun for kids. There is no right or wrong answer and students can really put themselves in others' shoes in this resource. I am a school counselor and work with students who are in kindergarten through 8th grade. I have included lots of real-life examples such as populations of countries around the world and actual Olympic luge results that are measured to the thousandth of a second. Here's an easy, no-prep partner game for your unit on expressions, graphing, variables, tables, and patterns! How to Use: Simply project the expressions on the interactive whiteboard and students become an input output machine (speaking in a robotic voice is, of course, optional). They secretly choose an expression and calculate outputs for their partner's inputs. This is great mental math practice too! There are two levels of difficulty to help all of your students participate. Level one expressions are one step (adding, subtracting, OR multiplying). Level two expressions are two step (multiplying AND adding or multiplying AND subtracting). Teacher Instructions: o Project these tables on the interactive whiteboard. o Students work in pairs. o One member starts as the “expression machine.” They secretly choose an expression from either table. o Their partner tells them an input number. They put it into the expression and say what the output would be. o Play until the partner can guess what expression they chose. Then switch roles. Grades to use with: This fun math game could work well in classrooms with students in grades 5-8. It could be an introduction to algebra in the younger grades or a warm-up for older students.
