This fun activity can help teach them multiple reading skills like blending, letter sounds, and matching the sounds we read to the picture we see- and with its colorful visuals and simple instructions, you can't go wrong! Simply put the Powerpoint into presentation mode and watch the car move from the first letter to the second letter to the third letter. As the teacher is clicking to go to the next slide, students should be making the letter sound that corresponds with the location of the race car. In the 4th slide of each word, an arrow appears showing students the word they read. Reading CVC words is an important strategy when introducing many phonological awareness skills emerging readers need to learn. CVC words follow the simple pattern of consonant-vowel-consonant and make it easier for students to transform individual letter sounds into short and simple familiar words. The short vowel sounds are the foundation of fluent reading. When students begin learning letter names and sounds the first vowel sounds we teach them are the short vowel sounds. The CVC short a words students will read in this activity are: can, jar, bat, cat, hat, rat, jam, and bat (like the baseball bat). In this SEL Boom Deck SEL presentation, there are 24 playing task cards with audio so there is no reading required. There are also 7 informational cards with audio as well. Students will learn about traffic light feelings. There are different intensity levels of feelings and each one is a certain color. For example, red means stop-this is when one is feeling angry, unsafe, really upset or scared. Yellow means slow down; feelings associated with yellow are worried, silly, excited, distracted in class and frustrated. Green means go-the feelings associated with green are happy, calm, proud, and focused. Students will click on either the red, yellow or green light image at the bottom of every page. There is a prompt to have students share what strategies can be used if someone is red or yellow and need to calm down. Some of the examples given in the Boom Deck are; Adam was nervous about the first day of school, Yani was frustrated that his friend was not playing by the rules, Sam knocked down his tower because he was upset about not having more red blocks, Julie was happy it was yoga day in P.E. today, Chase was super scared about the shadow of the cactus, Gigi felt grateful for her birthday present, Evan was super excited it was carnival day at school, Pari was feeling scared about the thunder and lightening, and many more child relatable scenarios. This lesson can be used for preschool, kindergarten, first grade and second grade. This lesson will help students self-regulate by encouraging them to identify and manage those strong feelings many students (and adults) have throughout the day. Play Fun Games To Introduce The Phonic Sound 'ck' (3 years +) Cut out the words and use the suggestions to make sentences with the child (children). Next, cut out the next set of words and sort them into sound sets by placing them into Top Cat's fat tummy. How To Use The Pre Reader Work Packs At Guinea Pig Education we believe children do not need to spend years learning reading skills; this innovative new scheme teaches children to read in just six months to a year. A non reader should start with our pre reading material. The Pre reader work packs use phonics or the sounds in words. The child can learn a series of phonic sounds, which give him or her a 'tool' to work out nearly 80% of words in the English language. The other 20% of words will be learnt by looking and saying the words. In these packs, the child (or group of children) will be taught to recognise initial sounds as in 'b', 'd' and vowel sounds as in 'a' - c...a...t. They will practise running sounds together to make words. The sentence maker will help him or her to organise the words into sentences. The packs are easy to use with clear instructions, for the adult to use with a child (or group of children). The structured material encourages the child to practise word building and sentence making using phonic sounds. To make learning a really fun experience, the material contains word games , like snap and bingo. The child (children) can move on when the adult is confident the sounds have been learnt. Learn To Read With Phonics Pre Reader packs are designed to start children reading who have not done any reading before. They are a starting point for learning to read with phonics. Children can start at three or four, if they are ready to concentrate. The Pre Reader packs introduce the 26 sounds of the alphabet, the skills of sounding out words with phonics and blending phonic sounds to make three and four letter words. The child (children) should practise the material each day and move on only when the child is familiar with the material. The course is structured. Each new sound builds on the one that went before. Tell the child (children) to personalise the drawings, adding to them, using their own ideas. Play the games . Repeat the exercises many times until they know the words. They should have fun learning to read.

All of these dot painting pages are no prep. They just need to be printed and given to students to decorate. The teacher will simply need to provide paints of various colors and cotton swabs. An alternative to using cotton swabs and paint is to have students decorate their pictures with dots of colored glue. Older students may want to try creating their pictures this way for a more tactile way to complete this art activity.

Teachers will love the easy set up for this center activity. By laminating these pages, teachers will have a reusable playdough center for students to use over and over. The playdough should not stick to the laminated pages. If laminating is not an option, I would recommend placing the playdough mats inside of page protectors or in plastic sleeves. The playdough will not stick to their surfaces as well.
