Mo Willems is the author of the Pigeon book series. The books contain large amounts of vocabulary designed for k-2nd graders. However, the pictures are so simple and adorable, they can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I adore this series so much that i have collected all of them despite that my son is almost 20 years old. As a result, I created the first of what I hope to be a series of reading comprehension and guided reading activity packs to make learning more fun for early elementary students as well as special education students and those with special needs in the areas of speech and communication. The book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late," is required reading in order for students to complete all of the activities. It is available for purchase at Amazon and at Mo Willems own website. You can also find it at your local library to check out. Students will practice reading and learn about grammar, spelling, and increase vocabulary. Activities include: Open-ended questions, writing prompts, based on the text in the book. Sight word recognition activities 32 Spelling Words 32 Vocabulary Words Alphabetization Fill-in-the-Blank Drawing And More Students will be given the opportunity to search for: 14 CVC words found in the book 14 nouns found in the book 18 sight words found in the book Great for: Reading Centers Literature Centers Guided Reading Read aloud activities Practicing Social and Emotional Skills Pigeon books are written so that the reader is directly being spoken to by the Pigeon. This is a quick, easy, and engaging activity to give preschooler or kindergartener students who need practice with recognizing the lowercase form of the letter Y, who need practice recognizing numbers up to 10, as well as for those students who need extra practice counting to 10. What is Included: A tens frame card for each number 1 to 10 with lowercase letter Y as counters Yarn themed number cards for 1 to 10 This counting math center can be used in the following ways Math centers Matching centers Small group activities Morning tubs or baskets Emergency sub plans Quick hands on counting assessment Quick number recognition assessment Skills assessed with this letter Y counting activity Lowercase letter Y recognition Ability to count to 10 Recognizing amounts when represented in a tens frame Ability to match numbers to the correct tens frame Fine Motor Skills This counting to 10 math center is low prep. This is a phonics AR game to help children, especially those with special needs, read words with the digraph 'AR'. Who can use this AR game? Any who need to use the digraph ar! But it is especially for those with special needs: games can take the pressure out of learning to read, especially for those who have become despondent or are reluctant for any reason. They are fun and take the child's mind off of the tedium, and winning is not dependent on their ability to read - it is the 'way the game goes'. What can it be used for? Why not send it home for homework? It can be used as a discrete form of assessment: is the pupil using knowledge of letter sounds , or GUESSING, which will lead to failure? What is included in the pack? Full instructions are given. The game comes in both black and white and colour versions. Children can be encouraged to colour the black-and-white version, and this will help the words in the 'ar' family to be established firmly in the child's mind. There are 3 boards with matching picture/word cards in both black and white and colour. Aim of the game: To help children to be able to sound out, or recognise, words with ‘ar’ in them, quickly. How to prepare the game: Choose either black and white or coloured. The children can colour the black and white boards, which will help to fix the words together in their minds as being in the same family. The game boards come in pairs: For each pair, choose one to be a board and cut the other up into individual picture/word cards. If only two people are playing, then they can choose which sets of pictures and cards they use. How to play: This is a game for two or three players. The teacher should watch if two children are playing together. Each player takes a game board. The matching letter/picture cards are scattered on the table face down. Players take it in turns to choose a card from the table. The child looks to see if s/he has the matching word or picture on his/her board. If so, the card is placed in position on the board. If not, it is returned to the pool on the table. The winner is the first person to complete his/her board. Teaching tips: Support children to sound words out/blend them as needed. This beginning sound sort is a great hands on activity for recognizing the most common sound of each letter of the alphabet. This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words. To complete this sorting activity , students will look at a picture cards to determine what sound the picture starts with, and then the students will place the card on the correct mat. This sort uses real photographs so students will easily recognize each image card. This sorting activity includes: One sorting mat for each letter of the alphabet 6 picture cards for each letter of the alphabet This beginning sound sort can be used in the following ways Literacy Center: The teacher can place this sort in a literacy center for students to complete. Morning Work: These worksheets make a great, easy to set up activity for students to complete as classmates arrive to class. Quiet Time Activity: Students who do not nap can complete this sort while their classmates rest. Small Group Activity: Teachers can call aside small groups of students who need more help with sound recognition to complete these in a small group setting.
