Richard Allen This First Grade Level H book is an interesting read for Black History Month. This month commemorates the achievements and history of African Americans. With this resource, your students can join in the February celebration! The text features Richard Allen, a builder and one of the first black legislators in Texas. Allen was born a slave in Richmond, Virginia in 1830. He was brought to Texas in 1837 and was eventually freed in 1865. He is credited with designing and building the Houston mayor's mansion and became a well-known contractor, bridge builder, and saloon owner. After the Civil War, he was a political leader and served one term in the Texas Legislature. He remained active in politics throughout his life. The book is sold individually as a Top Seller. It is also a part of the First Grade (Level G/H/I) Collection. Check out other biographies, fiction and non-fiction leveled books, and creative plays on this site by this author. Final e/Silent e/split digraphs Phonic Game: Build a Tower!

Here is an ultra fun game to help pupils learn to 'Spot the 'e''' and change from vowel sound to vowel name! This game covers i/i-e a/a-e o/o-e When introducing the Final e/silent ‘e’/split digraphs/CVCV words, many children have difficulty quickly changing vowel names to vowel sounds and vice versa. This game can help to take the stress out of learning. How to play The game involves each player having a baseboard upon which to build his/her tower. Players aim to be the first to build their tower and win! Word cards containing both silent 'e' and CVC words are scattered on the table - with an 'oops' card hidden amongst them! Players take turns to choose a card. If it is read correctly, the player places it on his/her baseboard and begins to build a tower. Teachers and parents may give the child as much help as needed to read each word and turn it into a teaching opportunity. With more confident children, you can change the rules so that the card is returned face down to the table if it is not read correctly. If a player chooses the 'Oops' card, then the whole tower is wiped off the player's board and the cards are returned to the table, face down and play continues until someone manages to build their tower. Your pupils will have so much fun they will forget that they are learning! Games take the pain out of learning! Ease of preparation: The game is easy to make: simply print the baseboards and desired word cards, then cut up the word cards. Full instructions included Who can use the 'Spot the 'e' game?
