Then, answer the questions about the author's message. ◾ Theme: Students answer the questions to determine which theme best fits the story and provide text evidence to support their choice. ◾ Thinking About the Text: Students will answer the questions about the story & include examples from the text to support their answers. ◾ Then & Now: Students will describe and illustrate how Dilly saw herself before the bug contest began. Then, they will describe and illustrate how Dilly sees herself now that she led the other bugs in their defense against the spiders. ◾ The Bugliest Bug Yearbook: Students will draw and label bugs for each superlative. ◾ Wait... There's More!: Students will write about what happens next in the story. ◾ Bugliest Bug Contest Flyer: Students create a flyer to attract contestants for the Bugliest Bug contest. The flyer should include words, colored illustrations, date, time, place, contest categories, and prizes. ◾ 2 - Crossword Puzzles: Students use the clues and the word bank to fill in the crossword puzzle (ANSWER KEY INCLUDED). ◾ Word Search Puzzle: Students use the clues to fill in the puzzle. Words can go across or down. Letters are shared when the words intersect (ANSWER KEY INCLUDED). ◾ Book Review: Students will rate and review the book. ◾ The Bugliest Bug Matching/Memory Game (Color and B&W versions included): Cut out the picture and description cards. Students match the bug to the correct description. This can be played in a variety of ways, such as a matching game or a memory game. Students can play at their table groups, with a partner, or in centers . ◾ 28 - Bug Bingo Cards (Color and B&W versions included): Students match the clues to the bugs pictured on their bingo cards using a dot marker or bingo chip to mark each bug as it is described or called out. If they get four in a row, they call BINGO and win. ◾ Bug Bingo PowerPoint Presentation: This PowerPoint presentation can be used when you play Bug Bingo to project random bugs from the book onto the screen. Just open PowerPoint in presentation mode and click the button to show randomized slides of the bugs. This resource is for extension read-aloud activities only. Using The Lion King movie guide, students will engage with science concepts including ecosystems, animal adaptations, environmental changes, food webs (and food chains), and what a disruption to the environment can do to populations. Using movie guides in the classroom can make content interactive and relatable for your class. Movies provide a visual for the content covered in class, so students can see real world (or animated world) applications.. Movie guides help students focus on important details throughout at the movie and think critically about what they watch. Movie Synopsis: The Lion King follows the journey of Simba, a young lion cub, as he struggles to figure out what he wants to do later in life. After his father, the king, is killed by his uncle, Simba runs away from home, because feels responsible for his father's death. As he grows up, Simba meets new animal species and makes new friends, who help him rediscover his strength and purpose. Eventually, Simba returns to face his uncle and take his rightful place as king of the Pride Lands, restoring balance to the ecosystem and to the kingdom. Speaking and listening standards are also covered, depending on how many of the above topics you discuss in your classroom. The movie guide provides an opportunity for teachers to "get back" some of that class time at the end of a unit, whether needed for grading projects, working one on one with students, or finishing up assessments. This Guided Reading Book - Building the Perfect Plate (Level L) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level.
