Here are two simple phonic games to help children hear the difference between the initial (or beginning) sounds 'm' and 'n', two sounds children may struggle to learn. Objectives: ·to help the child to distinguish between the sounds ‘m’ and ‘n’. ·To help the child to hear the sounds ‘n’ and ‘m’ in the initial position in words. Who can use the 'm' or 'n' Game? Any who have a child needing extra practice learning the initial sounds 'm' and 'n'. Teachers Parents Home educators Private tutors It is highly suitable for special educational needs pupils It can be used with ESL pupils What is included? 12 picture cards (6 of each initial sounds 'm' and 'n') - or 2 baseboards 12 letter cards (6 of each initial sounds 'm' and 'n') - or 2 baseboards 2 star cards All components come in either full colour of black and white. The eco print, black and white version is ideal for sending home for homework. The game can be played in two ways using either the letters or pictures as baseboards. Simple to make 1.Print out one copy of each chosen board, either letters or pictures. 2. Cut out the chosen individual cards. To Play: 1. Each player takes a baseboard. Vary it each time so that the players get a turn with both sounds. 2. Take it in turns to choose a picture card. Say the word. What sound does it start with? Help the child to emphasise the initial sound if necessary. Let him/her look in a mirror to see whether the lips start together for ‘m’ or apart for ‘n’. If the picture belongs on the player’s board it is placed in position. If not it is returned face down. Encourage the other player to try and remember where it is for his/her next turn. This helps in the training of the memory. 3. Play passes to the other player who does the same - until one player completes his/her board. Play then ends and that player is the winner. 4. Add excitement to the game with the use of the star card, which if selected means the player misses a turn.

Here is an ultra fun game to help pupils learn to 'Spot the 'e''' and change from vowel sound to vowel name! This game covers i/i-e a/a-e o/o-e When introducing the Final e/silent ‘e’/split digraphs/CVCV words, many children have difficulty quickly changing vowel names to vowel sounds and vice versa. This game can help to take the stress out of learning. How to play The game involves each player having a baseboard upon which to build his/her tower. Players aim to be the first to build their tower and win! Word cards containing both silent 'e' and CVC words are scattered on the table - with an 'oops' card hidden amongst them! Players take turns to choose a card. If it is read correctly, the player places it on his/her baseboard and begins to build a tower. Teachers and parents may give the child as much help as needed to read each word and turn it into a teaching opportunity. With more confident children, you can change the rules so that the card is returned face down to the table if it is not read correctly. If a player chooses the 'Oops' card, then the whole tower is wiped off the player's board and the cards are returned to the table, face down and play continues until someone manages to build their tower. Your pupils will have so much fun they will forget that they are learning! Games take the pain out of learning! These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them. This is a color sorting activity for early learners. This activity is simple, engaging and can help children develop their cognitive, motor and social skills. To conduct this activity , you will need two large cards - one red and one blue, and twelve smaller cards - six cards that are blue and six cards that are red. (There are multiple types of color cards to choose from 1) square color cards 2) square color card with the word of the color on the card 3) color word cards. These different smaller cards adds variety and interest to the activity and helps individualize to different learners. Here are the steps for conducting this activity : 1. Start by introducing the two large color cards to the children and ask them to identify the colors. 2. Then, show them the smaller cards and ask them to identify the colors of these cards as well. 3. Explain to the children that they need to sort the smaller cards onto the larger color cards based on their colors. 4. Model the activity by sorting a few cards yourself and asking the children to observe. In this 24-playing card SEL Boom Deck, students will play the rock, paper, scissors game and practice sharing their feelings! If playing for a whole class lesson, 2 students come up to the Smartboard or projector and one is person A and the other is person B. Person A touches the disappearing question mark above A to reveal either a rock, paper, or scissors image. Person B does the same. Then the winner of the rock, paper, scissors card game will share a time they felt the feeling below the winning card (either A or B). Students can also act out the feeling as well. The winner then drags and drops the feeling onto the stage where the image will disappear. The person who lost the game will stay at the board until they also get a turn. You can play this as a whole class, center activity, or with partners-it is up to you!
