STEM Project: Climate Change Solutions with Assessment Rubric is designed for middle school students from Grades 6 to 9. It's a real-world resource designed to deepen student understanding of climate change and stimulate critical thinking skills while brainstorming and researching viable solutions based on current and future technologies. This resource can be used in subjects such as Science, Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering and Earth Sciences classes. The hands-on approach in this project fosters active participation among students. They'll start by learning about the root cause of climate change and carbon cycles through online resources before proceeding towards a brainstorming session in order to think of solutions that could help rebalance our planet's atmospheric CO2 levels. Their ideas for technologies or inventions can fall into several categories like reducing greenhouse gases produced by human activities; enhancing photosynthesis to absorb more CO2; reflecting the sun's rays away from Earth; storing excess carbon emissions; or using chemistry principles to transform surplus CO2 into other forms. After choosing their solution concept within their groups or pairs, students delve deep into researching their unique idea. They will attempt to explain how their idea works, what materials are needed, and the optimal locations of implementation. For presentation purposes, students have creative control over whether to choose a poster layout or digital methods like PowerPoint slideshows and video compilations. To help keep things organized throughout the project, there’s an inclusive graphic organizer for note-taking. Additionally, an assessment rubric is provided for grading purposes and to guide the students throughout. This fun activity goes along with the novel Charlotte's Web, by E. B. White. In this activity , students create acrostic poems for characters from the story. Acrostic poems are a fun way to check students' understanding of the reading. Make sure to first go over how to complete an acrostic poem with words or short phrases that describe the character. The characters students will be writing a poem for are Wilbur, Charlotte, Templeton, and Fern. Charlotte's Web is usually read by 2nd through 4th graders. If you've never done an acrostic poem with your students, make sure they understand how to complete one. It's important they understand that the words and phrases MUST make sense to the character they've read about. For example, the W in Wilbur could stand for 'Wants a friend.' The C in Charlotte could stand for 'Caring.' You could have a discussion whole group first about how they would describe each of the characters. Students could also work in small groups. When students complete activities where they focus on the actions and traits of the characters in the story, they will understand the story better. They will also understand why characters act the way they do in the story.

Snowdrops Picture to Make is a fun resource for students to complete as culmination of a science unit, to welcome spring, or simply to put into practice their fine motor skills! Additionally, it can be used for art class, or for the study of flowers, or simply to make a card to give away. Instructions for making a sweet picture of snowdrops are included along with what is needed: • Green card A5 size • Blue/darker green and white paper • A green felt tip pen • A glue stick • Scissors • White/green/yellow/blue paint • A piece of stiff card • A cotton wool ball This activity is suitable for Grade 1 (Y2) and upwards. A total of 11 steps are included in the instructions. This activity is best implemented in small groups where the teacher, assistant, or parent is readily available to step in and help students. Older students may be able to work independently. During completion: name the parts of the flower such as: petal, stem, seed-vessel, leaves. After completion: encourage students to name the parts of the flower while describing their own flower. Mount the picture on a piece of folded A4 card and pin it up. You could even make it into a card and give it to someone!
