Unions Simulation Teacher Guide Hello and thank you so much for purchasing my Unions Simulation! My students have really enjoyed this, and I have enjoyed seeing the concepts and familiar battle lines come to life. I hope your students enjoy it too! The lesson is designed to have a warm up, a goal statement, an agenda slide, a (very) brief overview of work conditions and famous strikes, then the instructions to the simulation, and then finally a quick exit ticket to cement major ideas. In general for the simulation, students are divided into one of three groups: bosses, strike-breakers, and union leadership. Each with their own desired outcome or goal. Begin by walking students through the warm-up, goal statement, agenda, and mini-lecture to refresh their minds on the era in question. To start the game , prompt the “Bosses” group to announce how much they plan to cut wages by. If needed, try to encourage the bosses to announce a pay cut in the range of $10-12/hour. This is a number that is acceptable to the replacement workers, but unacceptable to union leadership–starting conflict Next round, prompt replacement labor to negotiate with the bosses. Prompt the Union group to decide whether the pay cut is “acceptable” and if not, what actions could be taken. From there, let the simulation play out until it reaches an organic conclusion. My classes have ended a few different ways– the union getting arrested for threats of bombs, the unions accepting a pay cut to $13/hour, replacement labor being hired at $11/hour after several set-backs, etc. The key is students realizing the tenuous relationship between unions and their bosses, and union members and replacement labor. At the conclusion of the activity get students back in their designated seat, discuss the activity, and administer the exit ticket. This is a How a Bill Becomes a Law Hexagon Project. This social studies project was designed for 8th – 12th grade students. Learning Intention: To explore the process of lawmaking by following a bill from being an idea to becoming a law. Task: You will be creating a hexagon foldable that explains the legislative process of lawmaking in a way that is easy to understand through the use of pictures and simple text. Directions: -Create a hexagon foldable that describes the legislative process of lawmaking. -Each flap must have the step number on the front with a picture (NO WORDS) and the description of the step on the inside of the flap. -The exposed middle area of the hexagon must have the title of the project ex: “How a Bill Becomes a Law.” -Text must be typed or NEATLY handwritten. Student hexagons must include: - The president’s role - The Senate’s role - The House of Representatives’ role - Role of committees - Role of a congressperson - Role of a citizen There is a Hexagon Project Rubric included. The rubric will score: -Description and content -Images -Organization and conventions You will print a blank hexagon template (included) for students to complete this task. When you have covered the topic of the legislative process of lawmaking with your students, this will be a purposeful project to have students engage in. Students can discuss each component that is a part of this process prior to beginning their individual project. Allowing students to discuss in small groups will refresh their learning and solidify their thought processes.

Teacher Guide Economic Systems Game Thank you for using this product to introduce economic systems in an engaging and memorable way! Consult the teacher instructions below to help you facilitate the game. Print the “Class Bucks” located in the folder where this instructions sheet was located. There is a pdf version and a google doc version. Each page contains 12 “bucks”. In my experience 5 “bucks” per student is enough to create a manageable but exciting classroom economy. The goal of the game is to demonstrate, in an over-simplistic way, capitalism, socialism, and communism using a rock paper scissors game that most students feel pretty competitive playing. I recommend having a very simple prize that students can buy at the end of the game if they achieve 10 or more bucks in a single round. In the past I have used treats or 5 extra credit points as incentives. For round 1 you are demonstrating capitalism. I recommend a high degree of stratification for this round. In other words, have some students start with 8 “bucks” and have others start with 1. You can use this random wheel to randomize numbers between 1 and 8. You might say “okay this is Jaylen” and then spin the wheel to see how many he starts with. The big difference here represents the stratification that is natural in capitalism. Possible for anyone to get rich, but easier if you started with more, etc. Play the round by having students wager “bucks” on a round of rock paper scissors After each round, take a minute to have the class note how many players got to 10 and how many had 0 or 1. This is typically a higher number for capitalism, which they might notice. After round 1 take a few bucks from the highest earners and give them to the lowest so everyone has at least 1 or 2. For round 2 you are showing democratic socialism. I usually have everyone start with 3, 4, or 5 and run the round again. Then I tax anyone over 6 back down to 6 and use it to try to guarantee everyone at least has 3. For round 3, I have everyone start with 4, and at the end of the round make it 4 again to demonstrate communism. Finally, review the reflection questions at the end to hit on major themes!
