This Guided Reading Book - Science of Seasons (Level Q) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: The Science of Seasons Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Earth & Space Science / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: How Earth’s tilt and orbit create seasons Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): Q What This Book Teaches Best Cause-and-effect in Earth science: The text explains how Earth’s orbit and its 23.5° axial tilt lead to changing seasons. Sunlight angle and temperature: Readers learn how direct, concentrated sunlight warms more than slanted rays that spread out and provide less heat. Key seasonal markers: The vernal equinox, summer solstice, autumnal equinox, and winter solstice are described with what happens to daylight and seasons. Hemispheres and opposite seasons: The book states seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres because of Earth’s tilt. How living things respond to seasons: It describes animals migrating or hibernating when weather turns cold and food becomes scarce. Learning Goals Students will describe Earth’s orbit and explain that one trip takes approximately 365 days. Students will explain how Earth’s axial tilt affects the angles of sunlight hitting Earth. Students will compare direct rays and slanted rays using the text’s heat descriptions. Students will identify what happens during an equinox and during a solstice, based on the text. Students will explain why seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Students will describe two ways animals survive seasonal change: migrating and hibernating. Key Vocabulary From the Text orbit — the path Earth travels around the Sun. axial — related to the line an object spins around. hemisphere — half of Earth. equinox — when day and night are nearly equal. migrate — move to a new place for better conditions. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What do you think makes Earth have different seasons during the year? Comprehension questions: According to the text, how do Earth’s orbit and axial tilt help create the seasons? Comprehension questions: What happens to daylight and darkness during the vernal or autumnal equinox? Comprehension questions: What are two ways animals survive when the weather turns cold and food becomes scarce? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Compares hot and cold deserts and identifies what they share: extreme dryness. Explains how wind shapes desert landforms, including dunes and how they shift. Describes how plants and animals survive desert conditions using specific examples (saguaro cactus; dromedary camel; fennec fox). Shows how deserts can change over time through erosion and rare rain events like a “super-bloom,” and explains what an oasis is. Learning Goals Identify the defining feature of a desert using details from the text. Compare hot deserts and cold deserts using information from the book. Explain how wind can shape deserts by forming dunes and changing rocks over time. Describe how at least one desert plant and one desert animal survive using text evidence. Describe what happens during a “super-bloom,” according to the book. Explain what an oasis is and why it is important in the desert. Key Vocabulary From the Text precipitation — water that falls as rain or snow. classified — sorted into a group using rules. dunes — giant mounds of sand shaped by wind. adaptations — traits that help an animal survive. erosion — rock wearing away slowly over time. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What do you think makes a place a desert? Comprehension questions: What does the book say is the defining feature that hot and cold deserts share? How does wind-blown sand change desert rocks over millions of years? What does the book say happens when a heavy rainstorm creates a “super-bloom”? Printing Tips 1. Fill in the Blanks Vocabulary Practice MCQS Snapshot Title: Fill in the Blanks Practice Worksheets Genre: Nonfiction / Practice workbook Subject: Reading Primary Topic: Using sentence clues to complete vocabulary blanks This Grade 3–4 workbook includes an examples sheet, six worksheets, and answers, and students complete sentence blanks by choosing the word that best fits each context. What This Teaches Best It teaches students to use sentence meaning to select the best vocabulary word. It combines word knowledge with grammar awareness so students notice what form fits the blank. It develops precision in choosing words that make a sentence logical and complete. It gives repeated practice with academic vocabulary in short reading contexts. Learning Goals Students will use sentence clues to choose the correct word for a blank. Students will explain why one answer choice fits better than the others. Students will use vocabulary knowledge to complete sentences accurately. Students will notice whether a sentence needs a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. What's Included in This 34-Page Resource: Part 1: Core Theory (10 Pages): A deep dive into the "why" behind professional boundaries, covering the architecture of a project scope, the boundary degradation cycle, and translating verbal boundaries into legally sound contract clauses. Part 2: Student Workbook (17 Pages): Eight powerful, scenario-based worksheets covering: Worksheet 1: Filtering Red Flags in Initial Inquiries Worksheet 2: Defining Scope from Vague Ideas Worksheet 3: Architecting Timelines & Communicating Delays Worksheet 4: Talking About Budgets & Payment Terms Without Flinching Worksheet 5: Defending Against "Scope Creep" Worksheet 6: Setting Communication Channels & Office Hours Worksheet 7: Structuring the Revision Process Worksheet 8: Handling "Emergency" Client Requests Part 3: Teacher Resources & Visuals (7 Pages): Visual Diagrams: Three clear flowcharts explaining Scope Creep Deflection, Watertight Scope Architecture, and "Pushback" Script Logic. Why Parents/Schools Love It: Builds Real-World Business Acumen: It bridges the critical gap between technical skill and business survival, teaching the practical "soft skills" that determine long-term success. Prevents Burnout and Exploitation: It directly teaches young professionals how to value their work, charge appropriately, and protect their mental health from the pressures of the gig economy. Turnkey Curriculum for Teachers: The resource is ready to implement immediately, complete with student-facing worksheets, visual aids, a full answer key, and a detailed teacher guide with a roleplay rubric. Fosters Professionalism and Independence: Students learn to see themselves not as subordinates waiting for orders, but as expert consultants who guide the client relationship with authority and respect. Target Student Audience : Based on the content, language, and practical scenarios, target the following student groups: High School (Grades 11-12): Specifically students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, business/entrepreneurship classes, graphic design, web development, digital media, or videography courses. College/University Students: Undergraduates in creative arts, marketing, communications, computer science, and business faculties who are likely to do freelance work or start their own business. Vocational & Trade School Students: Anyone in a program that leads to independent contract work (e.g., videography certification, coding bootcamps, design schools). FULL CATALOG OF DOWNLOAD LINKS AND ENCYCLOPEDIA INDEX HERE Lesson Snapshot Title: Ice Cream Genre: Nonfiction (informational text with headings) Subject: Reading (Informational Text) / Science & Food Primary Topic: What ice cream is, why it’s smooth, and its history Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): N What This Lesson Teaches Best Defines ice cream and names common parts: milk or cream, a sweetener, and flavorings. Explains a process (how it gets smooth): chilling/freezing while stirring. Teaches cause and effect about texture: stirring breaks up ice crystals so they stay tiny. Adds another cause and effect idea: stirring mixes in air so ice cream feels lighter and easier to scoop. Builds simple historical understanding with a timeline of examples (1851 factory; 1874 ice cream soda; 1904 cone at the World’s Fair). Learning Goals Students can describe what ice cream is made mostly from, using text details. Students can explain why ice cream is stirred while it freezes, according to the passage. Students can describe how tiny ice crystals affect the way ice cream feels. Students can explain how mixing in air changes ice cream’s texture and scoopability. Students can recount key history facts about ice cream from the passage (1851, 1874, 1904). Key Vocabulary From the Text sweetener — something that makes food taste sweet. flavorings — ingredients that add taste, like vanilla or cocoa. mixture — different ingredients blended together. crystals — tiny frozen pieces that can change texture. commercial — made or sold as part of a business. Cored Ed Encyclopedia Overview The Cored Ed Encyclopedia is a weekly series of lessons that you can pick up and use right away. These short readings fit into whatever time you have available. Each one includes a warm-up, a reading, and a set of questions, but it’s flexible — you can do just the reading, the full lesson, or skip the writing section if you need to. Each lesson focuses on a single topic so students don’t get lost. The writing is clear but never childish, making it perfect for grades two through five. Topics range from animals and science to history, inventions, and everyday things. No matter the level of the student, everyone should take away at least one new idea or fact from each lesson. The materials are easy to print, easy to explain, and require no setup. They work well for whole-class teaching, partner work, or independent study.

Physical Science Reading Comprehension Passage and Questions: The Lightning Rod (Docs) This very engaging science reading passage is about Benjamin Franklin’s lightning rod and how scientific understanding turned lightning from something people feared into a danger that could be managed. It explains that Franklin suspected lightning was a form of electricity, tested the idea with his kite experiment, and then developed the lightning rod as a practical way to protect buildings. The passage shows how a metal rod and grounding wire give lightning a low-resistance path into the ground , helping prevent fires in houses, barns, churches, ships, and modern buildings. This passage is designed to bridge the gap between science and literacy through strengthening reading comprehension and sparking scientific curiosity in middle school students. The passage blends English Language Arts skills with accurate science content that supports NGSS classroom practice. Ideal for interdisciplinary learning in ELA and Science. Using this Complete Weather and Extreme Events Prediction Unit, you can convert your students from passive observers of weather to skilled analytical forecasters! Are you sick of units that merely scratch the surface of the science of weather? This 30-page, ready-to-go unit challenges students in middle and high school to delve into deeper levels of meteorological investigation, such as thermodynamics and tornado development. The assessment in this unit is not just a bank of worksheets - it is a complete pedagogical system that promotes critical thought, data analysis, and an in-depth understanding of the atmospheric forces at work around us. The unit is broken down into three phases, which makes it simple to implement over a two-week time frame or as separate lessons/activities. The purpose of this unit is to prepare students to effectively educate others about severe weather. 30 page unit will be broken down into two phases. Phase 1 - Core Content & Theory - 10 Pages - This includes four chapters that represent the foundation of the unit. These chapters will help to explain to students complex topics in simple terms with real-life examples (i.e., 1900 Galveston Hurricane and the 1993 Superstorm). Chapter 1 - The Engine of the Sky (Air Masses & Thermodynamics) Chapter 2 - The Structure of Storms (Cyclogenesis & Frontal Boundaries) Chapter 3 - The Mechanics of Fury (Tornadoes & Hurricanes) Chapter 4 - The Meteorologists Toolkit (Data, Models, & Human Intuition) -This phase will contain real-life examples of each of these chapters. Phase 2 - Student Workbook - 11 Pages - The student workbook contains 10 worksheets with a variety of question types (e.g. Fill-in-the-blank, Data Analysis, Scenario Analysis, & Short Response) that will test the student's knowledge of the topics discussed in phase 1. Some possible topics that the student workbook could cover are: - Instruments used to measure weather and how to read a Synoptic Map. - How thunderstorms develop and how tornadoes develop. - Tropical Cyclones and Flash Floods - How blizzards develop, heat waves develop, droughts develop, and how to model a weather event using predictive modeling software. Phase 3: Visuals and Teacher's Resources (91 pages): The ultimate resource for teachers to help save time and increase lesson effectiveness. Professional Quality Visuals: 3 professionally designed and scalable diagrams/charts covering key concepts (Atmospheric Variables, Forecast Process, and Storm Intensification), which can be used to project or print. Detailed Answer Key: All the answers for each workbook question, including explanations for scenario-based problems. Teacher Implementation Guide: A complete blueprint for success, including a detailed pedagogical rationale, a suggested 2-week pacing guide, and differentiated instruction strategies for input of both developing and advanced learners. This resource is well-suited for: Grades 7 to 10 - Earth Science Advanced/Honors Middle School Science Electives in Meteorology or Environmental Science Homeschool Co-ops and STEM Clubs Emergency Sub Plans (No Preparation Needed!). Mastering the Process of Weather Predicting and Learning how meteorologists complete their work. Download for More Information. Keywords: Weather Units, Meteorology, Extreme Weather, Earth Science, Middle School Science, High School Science, NGSS, Worksheets, Activities, Tornados, Hurricanes, Weather Prediction, STEM, Print & Go, No Prep, Sub Plans, Cyclogenesis, Climates, Teacher Resources. There are Many Reasons Why Schools/Parents Enjoy Using This Innovation: Teaches Students to Analyze the Real World: In addition to teaching students about types of clouds, this program develops their analytical abilities through collecting and analysing data; using models for interpretation; and understanding the inter-relationships between the factors that cause changes within the Earth system. Ready to Use and Saves Time: The entire unit takes two weeks to complete and is complete with a teacher’s resource guide, a pacing schedule and an answer key. This makes preparing for instruction very easy. Connects Science with Human Influence: The case studies from amazing weather events (the Joplin tornado, the Galveston hurricane) provide relevance to this type of science and illustrate how vital it is to be able to predict weather (saving lives). Allows for Differentiation for All Students: The lesson plans in the teacher resource guide have been designed with differentiated strategies to enable every child to be successful (both developing learners and advanced learners). Professionally Designed Visuals that are Easy to Understand: Each lesson in this unit is supported by visually appealing drawings and charts (professional looking) that will help make concepts such as pressure gradients and forecasting workflows tangible and concrete for all students. Student Class Targeting : Identify students based on evidence from the teacher guide or complexity of material: 1) Primary Target Group: 7th and 8th Grade Middle Schoolers taking Earth or Integrated Sciences courses. Target Audience / Students Grades : Kindergarten & 4th/5th Grades are not targeted (English). The curriculum is developed with 1st through 3rd grade (ages 6-9) only - early elementary children who are in the concrete operational cognitive development stage; therefore, the curriculum utilizes concrete metaphors (e.g.; recipe, blueprint, vault, shield), large print for worksheets, and has scenarios appropriate for a given age, such as bats/frogs/knights/dinosaurs. This is not appropriate for kindergarten or 4th grade and beyond as the language and activity levels are too elementary for 4th and older students, and also too advanced for pre-k.
