They also explain how elements like audience, purpose, and point of view affect a document’s usefulness as historical evidence. Built using primary sources, these essays deliver an authentic student experience examining the past as historians do. The assessments follow the prototype Regents examination provided by NYSED, with two paired document sets, prompts, and scoring rubrics . Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: The Universe Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Science (Earth & Space Science) Primary Topic: Evidence the universe is expanding over time Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S What This Lesson Teaches Best Defines universe as “all of space and time and everything inside them,” expanding beyond the idea of stars as a “roof” above Earth. Explains how improved telescopes helped people realize some “cloudy” spots were actually faraway galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Uses the idea of galaxy light “shifted toward red” to show galaxies moving away and that space itself is stretching. Introduces the Big Bang as an explanation for expansion from a hotter, denser beginning, including the estimated age of the universe (about 13.8 billion years). Builds scientific curiosity by highlighting unanswered questions about “dark” ingredients that can’t be seen directly but affect the universe through gravity and expansion. Learning Goals Students will explain what the word universe means using details from the passage. Students will describe how better telescopes changed what people understood about “cloudy” spots in the sky. Students will explain what “shifted toward red” light suggests about galaxies and space stretching. Students will summarize the Big Bang idea as the universe expanding from a hotter, denser state. Students will describe why looking deep into space can also mean looking back in time. Students will identify one mystery scientists still study about the universe mentioned in the text. Key Vocabulary From the Text universe — all space, time, and everything inside them. galaxies — huge groups of stars far beyond the Milky Way. stretching — space expanding so distances grow larger. expanding — growing bigger as space spreads out. gravity — a force that affects everything by pulling. John Michael Osbourne: The Man, The Myth, and The Heavy Metal Legend

John Michael Osbourne: The Man, The Myth, and The Heavy Metal Legend
Creative Arts, Music, ELA, Reading, Writing, Research, Resources for Teachers, Social Studies, Biographies, High School, Homeschool Resources, Worksheets & Printables, Writing Prompts, Teacher Tools, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments

When John Michael Osbourne passed away almost three weeks ago in July, my daughter Gemma (she's 14) came to me crying because she had been listening to his songs since she was little. She wanted to know everything about his life - not just the crazy stuff everyone talks about, but the real story. I love that she is curious. She gives me ideas of resources to create based on her curiosity! So I started digging into Osbourne's background for Gemma, and wow - his story is absolutely fascinating. The way he turned all his struggles into something powerful? That is exactly what I want my kids to understand. Life's gonna knock you down, but you can choose what to do with that pain. You can choose to stay down or to get up and dust yourself off and try again. I ended up staying up way too late for about three weeks straight putting this whole thing together. This is not just another celebrity reading passage - I wanted to create something that would actually teach families about resilience and finding your voice. Look, I know heavy metal and homeschool do not usually go together, but sometimes the best lessons come from unexpected places, right? THIS RESOURCE INCLUDES: A detailed reading passage about his entire life (trust me, it's fascinating) 20 comprehension questions that actually make kids think 5 different note-taking sheets (because my three kids all learn totally differently!) A character organizer to dig deeper into what shaped him WHAT IS COVERED: His childhood struggles with learning differences and poverty How he started his famous band and changed rock music forever His solo career and that wild stage personality he became known for How he's influenced music and culture for generations This whole project has been incredibly personal for me since I have been listening to his music for over 40 years now, and watching my three kids discover these same never stops being amazing. I kept this resource family-friendly. I wanted to focus on his artistic journey and how he turned his struggles into something powerful - that's the stuff I wanted to focus on. If you and your students/homeschoolers enjoyed this resource, please leave a review. Thank you for your support! Tina - Big Easy Homeschooling Mom

These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. FULL CATALOG OF DOWNLOAD LINKS AND ENCYCLOPEDIA INDEX HERE Lesson Snapshot Title: Nests Genre: Nonfiction Subject: Life Science (animal behavior & habitats) Primary Topic: How animals build nests to protect young Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): N What This Lesson Teaches Best Explains the purpose of nests as “a special place” animals make to protect eggs or young. Shows that nests aren’t only for birds—some fish, insects, and mammals make nests too. Describes how nests are built from nearby materials (twigs, dry grass, leaves, soft feathers), and how some birds use mud or sticky spider silk. Compares different nest types and locations (smooth cups, simple scrapes, tree holes, burrows, hanging woven bags, domes with entrance tunnels). Connects nesting to safety and care: nests help hide eggs, block harsh weather, hold warmth while parents brood, and staying litter-free helps wild nests stay safer. Learning Goals Define a nest using details from the passage. Explain that many kinds of animals (not only birds) make nests. Identify materials the passage says nests can be made from. Describe at least two different nest shapes or structures mentioned in the text. Explain how nests help eggs and young stay safe and warm, using evidence from the passage. Describe one way people can help keep wild nests safer, based on the passage. Key Vocabulary From the Text Cliffs — steep rocky sides of land. Burrows — holes in the ground used as homes. Scrape — a shallow dip in sand or soil. Instinct — a natural feeling that guides what to do. Brood — sit on eggs to keep them warm. Cored Ed Encyclopedia Overview The Cored Ed Encyclopedia is a weekly series of lessons that you can pick up and use right away. These short readings fit into whatever time you have available. Each one includes a warm-up, a reading, and a set of questions, but it’s flexible — you can do just the reading, the full lesson, or skip the writing section if you need to. Each lesson focuses on a single topic so students don’t get lost. The writing is clear but never childish, making it perfect for grades two through five. Topics range from animals and science to history, inventions, and everyday things. No matter the level of the student, everyone should take away at least one new idea or fact from each lesson. The materials are easy to print, easy to explain, and require no setup. They work well for whole-class teaching, partner work, or independent study.

This barbers reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Barbers Genre: Nonfiction (informational passage) Subject: Social Studies / Careers & Community Primary Topic: What barbers do and how barbering changed over time Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S Support pages noted in the PDF: visualize prompt, pre-reading trivia, mixed questions, vocabulary activity, creative writing prompt, extension activities + “final facts,” and an answer key. What This Lesson Teaches Best What barbers do: cut, trim, and style hair, and often shave or shape facial hair. How places like barber shops can be about community (talking and sharing news) as well as haircuts. How a job can change over time, including barbers doing medical tasks in the Middle Ages and later separating from doctors and surgeons. How symbols communicate meaning: the spinning striped barber pole connects to earlier work (red/white linked to blood and bandages; a blue stripe is common in the United States). Reading for precise details (e.g., hair “swirls” near the crown; how rotating stripes create an illusion). Learning Goals Students will identify at least two services the passage says many barbers provide. Students will explain why barber shops became popular gathering places in Greece, using details from the text. Students will describe how the barber’s job “grew in surprising directions” during the Middle Ages, based on the passage. Students will describe what “bloodletting” means in the passage. Students will explain what the red and white stripes on a barber pole are often linked to and how the spinning pole can trick the eyes. Students will describe how the passage connects a simple shop sign to a long history (“a simple sign can carry a long memory”). Key Vocabulary From the Text clippers — electric tools that cut hair. mustaches — hair above the upper lip. swirls — curved patterns that twist around. bloodletting — making a small cut to let blood flow. bandages — cloth used to cover a wound. Teaches cause-and-effect mechanics : a pump-jet pulls water in and shoots it out the back to push the craft forward. Shows how steering and speed work (turning the nozzle; hull rises and “planes” at higher speed). Builds background knowledge with a short history of the Jet Ski brand (Kawasaki, 1973, early stand-up models, later sit-down “runabout” styles, racing). Connects reading to real-world decision-making with safety guidance (life jacket, age recommendations, secure footing/grip, protective clothing, respect wildlife). Describe how a rider steers a jet ski and what happens as speed increases. Summarize key information about how jet skis changed over time, including the 1973 introduction and later style changes. Identify safety tips from the text and explain why rules matter for riders and wildlife. Key Vocabulary From the Text watercraft — a vehicle made to travel on water. runabout — a small ride-on motorboat style. impeller — a spinning part that pushes water through. nozzle — the part that aims the water jet. hull — the main body of a boat or craft. Edgar A. Poe & Stephen King: Gothic vs. Modern Horror Reading Passage

Edgar A. Poe & Stephen King: Gothic vs. Modern Horror Reading Passage

As a homeschool mom navigating the world of high school literature with my ninth-grade daughter, I understand the challenge of finding resources that truly engage teens while building critical thinking skills. This Edgar Allan Poe & Stephen King: Gothic vs Modern Horror Reading Passage, Q & A, and 5 Note-Taking Sheets is a comprehensive teaching resource transforms the study of horror literature into an exciting exploration of how two master storytellers — Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King — have shaped our understanding of fear across different eras. When my daughter first read The Tell-Tale Heart , she was captivated by Poe's psychological intensity, but it was not until we compared it to Stephen King's modern approach that she truly grasped how literature evolves while maintaining timeless themes. This Edgar Allan Poe & Stephen King: Gothic vs Modern Horror Reading Passage, Q & A, and 5 Note-Taking Sheets resource bridges that gap, helping students/homeschoolers understand not just what these authors wrote, but why their techniques remain so powerfully effective today. The beauty of this comparison lies in how it makes classic Gothic literature accessible through the lens of contemporary horror that students/homeschoolers already recognize and appreciate. INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE: Comprehensive 4-page reading passage comparing Gothic and modern horror techniques 20 thought-provoking critical analysis passage questions A detailed answer key with guided answers for easy grading 5 note-taking sheets designed for different learning styles and approaches TOPICS COVERED: Psychological horror techniques and unreliable narrators in both Gothic and modern contexts Environmental symbolism and how physical settings reflect character psychology Evolution of horror themes from 19th-century Gothic to contemporary suburban fears Comparative analysis of how isolation, obsession, and evil function across different literary periods What I love most about this Edgar Allan Poe & Stephen King: Gothic vs Modern Horror Reading Passage, Q & A, and 5 Note-Taking Sheets is how it sets up our high schoolers/homeschoolers for the kind of thinking they will need in college — without making them feel overwhelmed right now. I have watched my daughter grow from someone who used to skim through reading assignments to a homeschooler who actually gets excited about discussing why certain scenes give her chills. The analytical skills she has developed through comparing these two masters of horror have carried over into every other subject we tackle. When she encounters complex texts in college, she will not be starting from scratch — she will already know how to dig deeper, ask the right questions, and make connections between different time periods and writing styles. That is the real gift we can give our kids: not just knowledge, but the confidence to think critically about whatever they encounter next. If you and your students/homeschoolers enjoyed this resource, please leave a review. Thank you for your support! Tina - Big Easy Homeschooling Mom
