This set of Silent E PowerPoint Flashcards has been created to help pupils differentiate between long and short vowel sounds. Many pupils, especially those with a processing difficulty, struggle to swap quickly from one to another, and therefore, much practice is needed. Aim and objective Once I start to teach Powerful ‘e’, I incorporate these flashcards into my daily lesson starter. My aim is that the child internalises the sounds so that on seeing a powerful ‘e’, they can say the right vowel sound and vice versa. This enables accurate blending and reduces frustration for the child caused by choosing the wrong vowel sound. How to use the Silent 'e' PowerPoint flashcards Work through the slides one by one. Teach the child to say the name made by the letters, followed by the word. They can use the picture as a cue. Do not underestimate the role of the picture to help the child give the correct sound. The more the correct sound is given, the sooner the child will internalise the sounds. Once the pupil seems confident, try using the set of slides without pictures! This can be done in stages, removing the pictures for the short vowel sounds first. Always return to the pictures if the child begins to choose the wrong vowel sound. We do not want them to struggle, even though we want to help them recall the correct sound. A balance must be found. What is included: Five vowel flashcards with picture cues Four Silent 'e' flashcards with picture cues (I do not teach E_E in the early stages as the few words with this sound that a child needs are best taught as sight words (e.g. here). The child is asked: Does it have an ‘e’? Yes, or no. What sound will the vowel make? (short sound, or long name) Can you sound out the word using that vowel sound? Click for the next word. The words can be edited to change the activity. The PowerPoint is A4 format, so the slides can be printed out to form physical matching flashcards.

IR Phonics Lesson

Here is taught lesson for the r-controlled digraph IR. Suitable for all, but especially written for the special needs pupil, this lesson is short, clear, to the point, has no distracting background music, has no distracting imagery, so helping the child to focus on the sound to be learned. The lesson begins by developing phonemic awareness of the new sound IR and a picture 'key' is provided to help the child remember the sound, one of the main difficulties when starting to learn the sound IR. The lesson then progresses to help children to read words, by sounding them out first. Learning to read through spelling is a helpful way to concentrate the pupil's mind on the lesson and to engage the pupil. We not only use words with which the child is familiar, but include some less well known IR words in order to help the child spot IR in words and sound them out. This is important as many children with a need will sound a word out accurately, but then, if they do not recognise the word, try to change it into something they do recognise. The lesson closes with an engaging task. One of the crucial tasks for the learner of IR is to spot the new sound in words and differentiate it from previously taught R - controlled words, such as AR and OR. For some children with special needs this is very hard. Therefore, this final activity asks the child to say which digraph each word contains as it floats onto the screen. The child is not required to read the words, but I find they like to! Of course, this is to be encouraged! What is included: One taught video lesson MP4 33 frames Instructions: an adult should sit with the pupil for best effect - this is not an entertainment but specialist phonics instruction. The video should be stopped as necessary and restarted when the pupil is ready to go on.

'B' or 'D' PowerPoint Phonics Presentations

Do you have a pupil who is still confusing 'b' and 'd' in Grade 2 or 3 or above? Then help is at hand. I have created this 'B' or 'D' phonics presentation to help children like these. I have tried every method under the sun and find this one works best - the use of the 'b' hand. Here, attached to them, goes everywhere with them, is a ready-made tool with which to check 'b's' and 'd's'. NOTE: I deliberately do not teach a child that one hand can make a ‘b’ shape and the other a ‘d’. Children with a processing difficulty need things kept as simple as possible, and that could well make them even more confused. How will they remember which hand is which? They will not just have b/d confusion but hand confusion too! Therefore, do not suggest such to your child, and if they notice for themselves, agree and do not dwell on it. Instead, stress the use of the ‘b hand’ to help with the identification of ‘b’, and if it is not the same shape as the ‘b hand’, then it is a ‘d’. For 'd', we rely on correct letter formation, saying C-D to help the child train the muscles, which in turn trains the eyes. Help the child practice writing the letters as demonstrated in this video. The training of muscle memory is a valuable multisensory tool. The eyes, the ears, the mouth and the hand all work together. Who is the 'B' or 'D' phonics presentation for? SEL Presentations Boom Deck-Traffic Light Feelings With Audio

In this SEL Boom Deck SEL presentation, there are 24 playing task cards with audio so there is no reading required. There are also 7 informational cards with audio as well. Students will learn about traffic light feelings. There are different intensity levels of feelings and each one is a certain color. For example, red means stop-this is when one is feeling angry, unsafe, really upset or scared. Yellow means slow down; feelings associated with yellow are worried, silly, excited, distracted in class and frustrated. Green means go-the feelings associated with green are happy, calm, proud, and focused. Students will click on either the red, yellow or green light image at the bottom of every page. There is a prompt to have students share what strategies can be used if someone is red or yellow and need to calm down. Some of the examples given in the Boom Deck are; Adam was nervous about the first day of school, Yani was frustrated that his friend was not playing by the rules, Sam knocked down his tower because he was upset about not having more red blocks, Julie was happy it was yoga day in P.E. today, Chase was super scared about the shadow of the cactus, Gigi felt grateful for her birthday present, Evan was super excited it was carnival day at school, Pari was feeling scared about the thunder and lightening, and many more child relatable scenarios. This lesson can be used for preschool, kindergarten, first grade and second grade. NG Endings Digraph PowerPoint Lesson

This 'NG Endings' digraph PowerPoint is a taught lesson especially suitable for those who have special needs or need a slower pace. Special features of the 'NG' PowerPoint lesson No words are introduced that cannot be sounded out, except common the sight words a, the and have. It does however presume that the child can blend both CVC words and consonant blend words with a short vowel sound, like pond. and words with CK . There are no distractions for the special needs child to have to 'block out' before s/he can learn - no jingly music, no comic pictures. Nothing moves quickly. Everything is explained very simply. Sound buttons are provided for use if necessary. What is included in/with the 'NG' Digraph PowerPoint ? This 'NG' PowerPoint is a narrated lesson.
