Summary Writing for Short Stories
ELA, Writing, Grade 7, 8, 9, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
“Summary Writing for Short Stories,” is Part 4 in my unit, Creating Independent Readers in your Middle School Classroom . This 19-page lesson, as well as the entire unit, is designed for 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students. Summary Writing for Short Stories has two parts to it, each with a lesson plan. In the first part, students learn how to summarize. In the second part, they practice summarizing as a group using the picture books of Chris Van Allsburg. It is not necessary to do the second part if you don't have time. By the end of this lesson, students will have written several summaries and will understand how to write a summary. This lesson focuses on fiction summary writing. Summaries are important to teach because writing them helps improve reading comprehension and writing skills. However, many students find fiction and nonfiction summary writing a challenge to write because they have a hard time narrowing down the key points. It is really good practice to have students write summaries regularly. It will improve both their organization and their skill in writing. The lesson plans include objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Common Core Standards, a Noticings and Wonderings or Evidence and Interpretation Chart , Criteria for Writing a Summary, Different Ways to Begin a Summary, a 5 W and H Chart for Writing a Summary, Sample Charts for “Thank You Ma’am” and “Charles” and Summaries for Each, a Narrative Summary Writing Rubric, a Chris Van Allsburg Summary Writing Group Activity Lesson Plan, and a Collaboration Chart (Looks Like, Sounds Like, Feels Like). In my 95-page complete unit, Creating Independent Readers in your Middle School Classroom , I offer a comprehensive plan for how to establish a successful independent reading program in your classroom. The unit includes the following Part 1: What We Do When We Read: Part 2: Reading Requirements Part 3: Reading Logs, Setting Goals, and Reflection Part 4: Summary Writing for Short Stories Part 5: Metacognitive Logs: Reading Response Part 6: How to Set Up An Amazing Classroom Library Parts 1, 4, and 5 are available as individual lessons. Navigating the teenage years often feels like a high-stakes balancing act where academic pressure and social expectations collide daily. As a homeschool mom, I have walked through those seasons of uncertainty with my own high schooler and understand the struggle firsthand. I created this High School Rooted in Radiant Confidence - 5-Day Teen Self-Esteem Mini-Devotional resource to provide a grounded, faith-based anchor that helps teens move past the noise of digital comparison and self-doubt. It is designed to be more than just a devotional; it is a supportive companion for your student’s journey toward true, lasting identity. By shifting the focus from external achievements to internal worth, this High School Rooted in Radiant Confidence - 5-Day Teen Self-Esteem Mini-Devotional helps students/homeschoolers see themselves through the lens of a loving Creator. Ultimately, my goal is to provide a user-friendly tool that fosters deep introspection while lightening your load as a busy educator. Furthermore, this resource offers a structured way to nurture your student's/homeschooler's heart during a time when they are beginning to define their own path. It serves as a gentle reminder that their value is secure regardless of the changing opinions of the world around them. INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE: Five-day devotional guide with Scripture prompts. Daily reflection questions for meaningful journaling. Structured goal-setting templates for future growth. Dedicated note pages for tracking personal insights. TOPICS COVERED: Embracing unique God-given personality and gifts. Overcoming self-doubt through reliance on Christ. Purpose-driven living and service to others. Finding strength within moments of personal weakness. Finally, the conclusion is intentionally crafted to help teens carry this momentum forward into their everyday lives. I suggest simple methods, such as using "scripture anchors" or maintaining the journal for monthly reviews, to ensure the impact continues indefinitely. Because we all know that teenage life can be unpredictable, this section provides a "reset" button for those inevitable days of discouragement. By sharing these prompts with trusted mentors or parents, students/homeschoolers also build a community of support that reinforces their new perspective. Ultimately, this devotional is meant to be a foundational building block for a lifetime of faith-based self-esteem. Whether used during a quiet morning or a weekly check-in, this High School Rooted in Radiant Confidence - 5-Day Teen Self-Esteem Mini-Devotional resource offers a steady path toward walking in radiant, Christ-centered confidence. It is my sincere hope that this resource will serve as a constant reminder of who they are and whose they are. May it provide them with the encouragement they need to face every challenge with courage and grace. If you and your students/homeschoolers enjoyed this resource, please leave a review. Thank you for your support! Tina - Big Easy Homeschooling Mom
