Conflict Types in Stories word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this conflict types in stories puzzle set for my 4th graders during our reading unit. The kids could say a character had a problem but had no idea what words like person vs person, internal, or external meant when we talked about different types of conflict. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like person vs person, person vs self, person vs nature, person vs society, internal, external, conflict, struggle, and character. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the conflict vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a person vs self conflict is harder to solve than person vs person. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple two people, tornado, and thought bubble drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a story conflict using three words from the puzzle on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Subject and Predicate word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this subject and predicate puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our grammar unit. The kids could write a sentence but had no idea what the naming part or the telling part was called. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like subject, predicate, naming part, telling part, who, what, action, complete sentence, simple subject, simple predicate, noun, verb, and sentence fragment. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the sentence parts finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a sentence can have more than one subject. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple stick figure and action arrow drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 2nd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers underline the subject and circle the predicate in a sentence on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like question, hypothesis, prediction, experiment, variable, control, observe, record, data, results, conclusion, analyze, test, repeat, and theory. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether you can skip steps in the scientific method. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple beaker and clipboard drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write the six steps of the scientific method in order on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
