Expository Writing Terms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Word Searches, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Crosswords Puzzles
Expository Writing Terms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this expository writing puzzle set for my 4th graders during our writing unit. The kids could tell you facts about a topic but had no idea how to organize them into an essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like expository, explain, inform, topic, main idea, fact, detail, supporting detail, introduction, body paragraph, conclusion, transition, topic sentence, thesis, and research. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the expository terms finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether expository writing can include opinions. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple lightbulb and notebook drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a topic sentence for an essay about dogs on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Rain Forest Plants word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Not Grade Specific, Word Searches, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables
Rain Forest Plants word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this rainforest plants puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our ecosystems unit. The kids knew about tall trees and vines, but they had no idea about the specific plant names like bromeliads, orchids, or lianas, or what words like canopy, understory, or emergent meant when we talked about the different layers of the rainforest. They kept asking questions like "Do flowers grow on the forest floor?" and "What's that plant that grows on other plants?" So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like bromeliads, orchids, lianas, ferns, rubber tree, cacao, banana tree, heliconia, giant water lilies, passion fruit flower, canopy, understory, emergent, and forest floor . The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "bromeliads" or whether a liana is a vine or a tree. The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've watched a short video about the rainforest layers or looked at pictures of the different plants. I added a couple simple leaf, orchid, and vine drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one plant from the puzzles and write what layer of the rainforest it grows in on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Grade 8 Career Readiness word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this career readiness puzzle set for my 8th graders during our transition unit. The kids were starting to think about high school and the future, but they had no idea what words like resume, interview, or skills meant when we started talking about preparing for a career. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like career, skills, resume, interview, job, application, references, cover letter, communication, teamwork, responsibility, and goal . The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "resume" (it's a tricky one with accents, but we keep it simple) or whether skills and talents are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a list of soft and hard skills nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the difference .
