Reading Comprehension Signal Words word search, scramble and crossword
Holiday & Seasonal, ELA, Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Word Searches, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Crosswords Puzzles
Reading Comprehension Signal Words word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this reading comprehension signal words puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our reading unit. The kids could read a paragraph but had no idea how words like "first," "next," or "finally" helped them follow the order of events. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like first, next, then, finally, after, before, meanwhile, during, earlier, later, soon, eventually, at last, in conclusion, and to summarize. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the transition signal words finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "meanwhile" means at the same time or later. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple arrow and timeline drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write three steps for getting ready for school using signal words on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like comprehension, content, vocabulary, text feature, diagram, label, caption, glossary, index, and heading. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the cross-curricular vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether reading to learn is the same as reading for fun. The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple book, magnifying glass, and globe drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write one text feature they saw in a nonfiction book on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

The materials were created during an afternoon when student engagement was low. The objective was to provide an activity that resembled a game while also stimulating cognitive function. The puzzles proved effective in achieving this goal. The PDF document is four pages in length. It includes two puzzles for student use (a word search and a word scramble) and two answer keys. Visual elements are incorporated to enhance engagement without causing distraction. The graphics are designed to be appropriate for the target audience. ⭐ The students in the class find these items enjoyable. They work on them in groups during the morning session, or they are provided to students who complete their work early to occupy their time. The word search activity has also been utilized as a quiet activity following recess. The word scramble activity often initiates discussions, such as the correct form of the word "recycle." The preparation required is minimal. The materials are printed, distributed, and then the students begin the activity. Occasionally, students are instructed to highlight or circle their preferred word and use it in a sentence. This extends the activity beyond simple enjoyment and enhances its educational value.
