One-Step Equations in Real Life Worksheet

Here's a ready-to-go set of worksheets for students in 2nd and 3rd grade learning early and foundational algebra ideas about one-step equations. Students will get a chance to write simple, one-step equations to represent real-world situations using the four operations. Then, they can practice solving each equation. Since it's designed for your younger elementary students, no variables are used on these worksheets- students simply include a missing number box in each equation!

How to Use:

• Print 4 pages for each student.

• Start with the included handout. It takes students through a sample situation: showing how to create a simple equation with a missing number box from a story word problem.

• Then, show your students how to use the opposite math operation to help solve the equation.

• Finally, your students must put the solution back into their original equation to see if it is the correct solution!

• Next, give your students three pages of sample problems.

• They can work on them alone or in pairs. They repeat the same steps for each word problem: write an equation, solve, and check.

• On the final page, they can write their own word problem.
