Writing Process Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this writing process puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our writing workshop. The kids could write a story but had no idea what words like brainstorming, drafting, or revising meant when I asked them to move through the process. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like brainstorm, prewrite, draft, revise, edit, publish, share, idea, organize, sentence, paragraph, word choice, grammar, spelling, punctuation, peer edit, and final copy. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the writing process terms finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether revising and editing are the same thing. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple pencil and checklist drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers name one thing they do during revising on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
