Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Write a short opinion piece in review form, giving a rating and then the reasons behind it
Match the register of a public review — brief, direct and addressed to a reader who has not seen the subject
Apply the same format to different content, whether a novel character, a historical figure, a place or a science observation
Judge a classmate's review against the printed prompts Useful, Funny and Cool
Teaching tips
Take your own copy of the slide deck before the lesson: the linked presentation opens read only, and steps 1 to 4 on the instruction page cover signing in, clicking the link and sharing the copy
The background of each slide is locked, so students can add text and images without dragging the layout out of place
Choose the variant by task — the lined pages suit handwriting and the unlined ones are meant for typed text boxes and pasted images
The half-page layout puts two reviews on one sheet, which works for a class set or for a compare-two-opinions pairing on the same subject
Finished slides can be exported as a PNG image through File then Download, which makes them easy to drop into a display or a shared class document
Skills covered
Opinion writing in review form — students commit to a rating and then justify it in the body of the template, the use the file's own About page describes.
Writing to a fixed format — the rating area, heading line and Useful / Funny / Cool footer stay constant, so the content changes while the structure does not.
Transferring a familiar form to academic content — the suggested subjects are a novel character or setting, a historical person, a geographic area and a science record.
Working inside a locked slide layout — students add their own text boxes and images to the blank versions without moving the background.
Exporting finished work — the instruction page walks through saving a completed slide as a PNG image for display or submission.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
What has to be set up before students can type into the slides?
Take your own copy first. The link inside the file opens a read-only presentation, so sign in to a Google account, click the link, and the copy that opens is yours to change and to share with the class. The four steps are printed on the instruction page.
How do the four template versions differ from each other?
By size and by whether lines are printed. Full-page and half-page layouts each come lined and unlined: the lined full page carries about seventeen ruled lines, and the half-page sheet gives seven lines to each of two reviews.
What is printed on the template besides the writing space?
A rating area and a heading line sit above the body, and the footer beneath it reads "Was this review…?" followed by the three response words Useful, Funny and Cool, which a partner can tick after reading.
