The protagonist, Winnie Foster, is a 10-year-old girl who meets the Tucks and learns about their secret. As she spends time with the Tucks, she must decide whether to keep their secret or reveal it to the world. Along the way, she faces challenges such as the villainous Man in the Yellow Suit, who wants to exploit the spring for his own gain. In the end, Winnie makes a decision that changes the course of her life and the lives of those around her. The book explores themes of life, death, and the nature of humanity, as well as the consequences of living forever. Integers are everywhere in our lives! Get your students excited about learning about integers including using number lines and finding the difference between integers in a variety of real-life situations. This is perfect for students in grade six who are first learning about rational numbers. Social Media: Up Votes and Down Votes: You will read each statement one at a time to your class. Then ask for upvotes (and count the hands) and ask for downvotes (and count the hands). Remind students they can abstain from voting on a statement if they are ambivalent. If you think it will help your class, have students vote anonymously by putting their heads down. Record the upvotes and downvotes for each of the 10 statements. Students complete the math (which is really adding integers) to get each statement’s final score. (Extension: This activity can lead to a mini-lesson on facts vs. opinions.) Cities: Temperatures and Elevations: Students will need internet access for this activity. They will explore two cities: one with a positive temperature in degrees Celsius and one with a negative temperature in degrees Celsius. Using a number line, they will compare these two temperatures. Then, they must find the elevation (in meters) of six cities around the world to complete three math questions. Sports: Golf and Football: Students will apply adding and subtracting integers to a golf game to calculate the player’s score above or below par. Then, they use integers to calculate if a football team scores a touchdown. (Extension: Students can create their own football scenario. They can choose a starting point, make up 5 plays, and trade with a friend. ) Financial Literacy: Bank Account: Students add and subtract integers to keep a running bank balance in an account with an overdraft. Teacher Instructions: The unit of astronomical distance, light-years, can be a difficult but essential concept for students to comprehend. This activity will get your students moving and, hopefully, help them understand what a light-year is. Step One: Give your definition of light-years to your students and explain why this is important for them to understand. I like to tell my students that Proxima Centauri is our nearest star, and it is 154.243 light years away. Let’s pretend we have a friend on Proxima Centauri right now. If we went outside and waved to him, when would he see us waving? He would not see us waving until 4.243 years from now. that is because it takes light 4.243 years to reach him. Step Two: Make copies of the table attached and hand out to your students. Clear some room in your class or go outside. Line your students up and tell them to run for one second. Have them look at how far they traveled and tell them that that is considered their run-second. Have them line up again and tell them to start running. Time them running for one minute. Have them measure the distance they traveled. Tell them to record the distance on their recording table next to “my run minute.” Bring them back into class and instruct them to figure out their run-week, run-month, and run-year. Conclude by telling your students that their run-year is how far they would travel in one year. A light-year is how far light travels in one year.

"The Hero of the French and Indian War – Major Robert Rogers" - A History Play

I use this interactive play to introduce someone to my students who is largely forgotten in American History. His name is Major Robert Rogers. Rogers is one of the big heroes for the British and Americans during the French and Indian War. He was a living legend in his time. In this play I have included printables /parts-of-and-anatomy-of">parts of his life during the French and Indian War including two of the most well-known events - his escape from capture in the Second Battle of Snowshoes and his raid on St. Francis. Rogers and his "Rangers" accomplished many tasks thought to be too difficult or outright impossible, but these two cemented his status as hero and legend. Another part of the play explains a little about the Rangers (think special forces of the 18th century) and how Rogers took anyone - British, American, Native American - and any of these men could lead no matter their birth or race if they showed promise.

This is a super fun project to do at the end of October before Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The download includes 3 different sugar skulls templates for students to choose from. After choosing their skull, they decorate them in such a way that it represents themselves. This download also includes 2 writing papers (1 scaffolded and 1 final draft style) that prompts kids to write about how they decorated their skulls. Keep the skulls and final drafts and hang them in the hall- it makes for a great bulletin board!
