Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Area, Perimeter, and Volume

Here's a ready-to-print set of 5 math stations that can supplement a middle grads math unit about area, perimeter, and volume of right-angled shapes. Math centers or stations are a wonderful way to get your students engaged in what they learn as they move around the classroom and work cooperatively with their classmates. Even when your students are in the intermediate or middle school grades, they can benefit from a wide variety of teaching techniques including the implementation of stations or learning centres! But creating these stations takes a lot of time, so let me do it for you! Station 1: This stations gives students four word problems to sovle that all involve geometry skills about area, perimeter, and volume. Station 2: This station gives students hand-on practice as they measure the volume of a real cardboard box. You will need to provide a few boxes and rulers for your students. Station 3: This station lets students design a backyard with different zones of grass, cement, a pool and more. They calculate the area and cost of each zone. Station 4: This station lets students practice calculating area and perimeter of complex shapes and they can try an online game! Station 5: This station lets students apply their knowledge to a real world math problem, and they practice carefully explaining their mathematical thinking in pictures and words. Break your students into 5 groups and have them rotate through the centers in 15 minute increments. Allow students to start at one station and move to another at their own pace as long as no station gets too crowded. Assign only one or two stations that work best for your students. Give a station as a quick review or homework assignment. Grades to Use With: These stations work well in grades 4-7 classes or high school special education. In this product, you will receive 10 unique Unwind Your Mind SEL activity mats. These are wonderful for SEL follow-up activities, morning work, brain breaks, school counseling handouts, etc. There are 4 seasonal activity mats; fall, winter, spring, and summer. There are 2 partner-focused mats so students can connect, build friendships, and create a safe classroom community. There are 4 mats for any day of the year! Students from upper elementary through middle school will enjoy these mats. (Even adults and high schoolers would like to do some of these!) On the mats, there is mindfulness coloring/zentangle coloring, mazes, word search, reflections, SEL prompts, and more. For example on one of the mats, there is a mindfulness coloring of an anchor with the prompt to encourage students to think about what grounds them as they color. There is also a squiggle and students are encouraged to create their own unique design from it. There is also a heart maze, a triangle breath image, and an image of a turtle to encourage students to think of what brings them strength. On another mat, there is a line of different emojis and they are asked to circle how they feel in that moment. There is also a mindfulness coloring of a hot air balloon and the prompt is for them to imagine all of their worries are in the basket and as they color, they are asked to think of their worries floating away. On that same mat, there is a rainbow breath exercise and an image of a brick wall with the prompt for students to write in the bricks what gives them a solid foundation; their values, strengths, and purposes in life. Each mat is unique but offers opportunities for students to take a moment to relax, get their minds off their daily stress, and have fun. It is best to print these on legal-size paper so images and text are a good size with plenty of room for students to write and draw.

This lesson teaches students an organized and thorough approach to writing 5 sentence paragraphs. It is designed for middle school students in grades 5-8 or high school special education students. It introduces the terms: Point (stated in the topic sentence & the concluding sentence): says what the paragraph is about by making a claim or sharing an opinion Evidence: a fact, statistic, example, or quotation from a text that supports your point Explanation: your explanation and analysis of why the evidence supports your point Then it teaches students how to use these kinds of sentences to create a cohesive paragraph. Colour-coding is used to make the information more visual, but the pages can also be printed in black and white. What's Included: 10 Page PDF ready to print and go! Title Page/Teacher Instructions Student Handout with all of the necessary terminology: Students can refer back to this again and again! Seven engaging activities are included: Two cut-and-paste sample paragraph activities: These activities have 5 sentences which are mixed up. Students cut them out and paste them in the correct order to create logical paragraphs. One is about Little Red Riding Hood and one is about Mi'kmaq culture. Three paragraphs that have errors that need fixing: These paragraphs don't have five sentences in the correct order, or the correct types of sentences. Students may have to cross out a sentence and/or add a sentence. There is room to re-write the entire paragraph correctly.
