The Constitution is A Living Document: A Project to Assess Knowledge and Understanding

The most important thing about this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is how students truly internalize how the Constitution is not just some old stuffy document but really is alive in our lives and protects our rights and our democracy. I have had students come back to me when they are in high school to tell me how much they got out of this project. I have also had several students tell me they helped their immigrant parents pass the citizenship test. They were able to teach their parents about our government. My favorite is how many 8th-grade students tell me they are now interested in current events and regularly follow the news! The purpose of this project, The Consitution is a Living Document, is to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the Constitution. The project is divided into 3 sections. The first section focuses on the Constitution, particularly Articles 1, 2, and 3. They will write an essay and then read 3 news articles that connect to each of these articles. They will summarize the articles and analyze how this news event connects to each of these articles. In Section 2, students will write an essay on the Bill of Rights and Amendments and read 7 more current events news articles, summarize them, and then analyze how each event connects to a specific amendment. The third section includes a Conclusion essay in which they reflect back on what they learned about themselves, doing a project of this magnitude, and about the Constitution,and a Bibliography. This is a comprehensive project and will take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. For each section, I provide lesson plans with objectives and learning targets aligned with the Common Core Standards. teacher directions, student directions, handouts, graphic organizers, check-off sheets, and rubrics. This project could be easily modified to fit a shorter time frame. With modifications, it is appropriate for students in 6th through 12th grades. This project is part of my unit: “Our Living Consitution” which is designed using the Into, Through, and Beyond model of lesson planning. This project can be taught independently, but it is an excellent summative assessment for all my lessons on the Constitution in my unit. The lessons in the Constitution unit can be used independently or as a supplement to what you already teach or as a whole. Lab Station Activities: The Scientific Method and Science Skills Engage students in learning science skills and the scientific method with this hands-on lab station activity . Students rotate through 9 stations, each offering a unique way to apply and practice concepts like using the scientific method, identifying variables, drawing inferences, analyzing data, and more. Mixed Questions The mixed questions section of each lesson includes a variation of five to six comprehension, vocabulary and Math questions. In addition, key reading strategies are frequently covered including cause & effect, summarizing, compare & contrast and making conclusions. Mixed questions require a written response (no MCQ's), full answers and example responses appear at the end of the lesson. Spelling & Vocab Each reading passage contains a variety of words and phrases designed for Grade 6/7 students. Spelling and vocab activities provide the opportunity to build fluency with these words. Activities provide clues to help assist students. Vocabulary activities include extra questions where students must write a synonym, an antonym or a sentence using a certain word. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. The main focus in this product, is the student. Prompts will require the student to relate to past experiences and encourage them to discuss feelings and ways to improve. Full Answer Keys Full answer keys and sample responses are provided so no matter how busy you are, you know you're covered! Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, Math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student. The movie is based on a classical music album of the same name and tells the story of a young boy named Christoph (played by Illya Woloshyn), who lives in Vienna, Austria during the 1800s. One day, Christoph's mother takes in a new tenant, who turns out to be the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven (played by Neil Munro). Christoph is initially irritated by Beethoven's odd and grumpy behavior, but eventually becomes fascinated with the composer's music and begins to understand the genius behind it. As Christoph spends more time with Beethoven, he learns about the composer's struggles with deafness, poverty, and loneliness. Christoph also witnesses Beethoven's creative process and how he channels his emotions and experiences into his music. Throughout the movie, Christoph and Beethoven's relationship grows and they develop a deep respect for each other. Christoph helps Beethoven to hear his music by playing it on the piano, and Beethoven inspires Christoph to pursue his own dreams of becoming a musician. In the end, Beethoven moves out of Christoph's house, but leaves him with a gift - a manuscript for his latest symphony. Christoph plays the symphony with an orchestra and realizes the beauty and power of Beethoven's music. "Beethoven Lives Upstairs" is a heartwarming and educational movie that highlights the importance of perseverance, creativity, and human connection.
