The movie is set in Nazi Germany during World War II and follows the story of an 8-year-old German boy named Bruno. Bruno's father is a high-ranking Nazi officer, and the family moves to a new home in the countryside when his father is assigned to oversee a concentration camp. From his bedroom window, Bruno sees the camp in the distance but doesn't understand what it is. One day, Bruno decides to explore the woods near his home and stumbles upon the camp. He meets a Jewish boy named Shmuel who is wearing the striped uniform of a prisoner. Despite the barbed wire fence separating them, Bruno and Shmuel form a friendship, and Bruno begins to visit him regularly, bringing him food and playing games with him. As the movie progresses, Bruno starts to become aware of the true nature of the camp and the treatment of the prisoners. He decides to help Shmuel find his missing father and sneaks into the camp, wearing a striped uniform like Shmuel's. The two boys are led into a gas chamber, and the movie ends with a shot of the empty chamber and Bruno's parents realizing their son is missing. Even when students are in middle school or the intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations or centres! But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about fractions, decimals, and percent. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using percentages. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a game to practice calculating sales & tax. (supplies needed: 6-sided dice) Station 3: Students design a floor plan and calculate what percent of the space each room occupies. Station 4: Students practice converting between percent, decimals, and fractions and play an online game . (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life problem, and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. Grades to Use With: These stations work well for grades 5-7 or high school special education classes. Standards: CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS7.RP.A.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
