Separating Mixtures - Find the Pair Game for Middle School

This is an engaging and enjoyable memory game on separating mixtures including evaporation, distillation, fractional distillation, filtration and chromatography. Pupils work in teams of three or four. Each team lays out their 42 cards face down in a square and take it in turn to turn over two cards. If the cards are a question and its correct answer, the pupil keeps the pair. If they are not a match they are turned face down and the next pupil gets a turn. This process continues until all cards are matched and the winner is the pupil with the most pairs. If a team member thinks that the selectors pair is not a correct match, they can challenge. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer but the teacher also has a quick-check answer sheet. If the challenge is correct, the challenger keeps the pair. This resource was developed to partially meet the requirements of the 8th Grade Statistics & Probability standards below (portions met in bold): CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.SP.A.2 Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.SP.A.3 Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems in the context of bivariate measurement data, interpreting the slope and intercept.For example, in a linear model for a biology experiment, interpret a slope of 1.5 cm/hr as meaning that an additional hour of sunlight each day is associated with an additional 1.5 cm in mature plant height.

Rules of the Game · Each player selects seven dominos from the top of the face-down pile and holds them in their hand like playing cards. · The player whose surname begins with a letter closest to the letter A starts and play proceed in a clockwise direction. · Dominos can be matched exactly, or a name can be matched with a symbol or descriptions, sketches and circuit diagrams can be matched. · If a player thinks a match is wrong they can challenge. If the challenger is correct, they give a card from their own hand to the challenged player. Slope Race Partner Activity

This is a Slope Race Partner Activity . This activity will give your students practice with finding slope and it requires them to use their expressive and receptive language skills to share information with a partner. There are 4 problems for students to complete. Step One: Break your class up into pairs. (I like to partner students who have more mastery over slope with students who are struggling.) Hand out blank race packets to the students and explain to them that they will need to work as a team to win the race. Step Two: Once the first team finishes, check their answers but encourage the other teams to keep going for 2nd and 3rd place. You could also vary this activity by setting a timer and having students race against the clock. The first team that finishes with correct answers before the time ends are the winners. This makes a great review activity at the end of the math unit . An answer key is included. I hope you enjoy! I Have Who Has is a class activity that is a student favorite. This set contains 36 cards with questions for squares of numbers, cubes of numbers, square roots of numbers and cube roots of numbers. It is a PDF file. I HAVE WHO HAS: PERFECT SQUARES AND CUBES Directions 1. Make a copy of the cards. You will only need one set to reuse for all of your classes. Use color paper and laminate if possible. (I had a set of I Have Who Has that were not laminated, used them for several years, and they held up well.) 2. Have students number 1 -36 on a piece of paper. 3. Mix up the cards and pass them out, one to each student. There are 36 cards so a few students might get two cards depending on your class size. 4. Any student can start with their WHO HAS. The student that has the value equivalent to the WHO HAS statement speaks up and says I HAVE ____ WHO HAS_____. (reading their card) Students will record the answer on their paper whether they have the card or not, trying to beat the person who has the card. Continue in this manner until you return to the starting card and they will then get to say their I HAVE. 5. I suggest having the cubes you don't expect the students to have memorized on the board (such as the cubes of 11 -15). You might even want to have a poster of those permanently on the wall. 6. I always made I HAVE WHO HAS a race for the class. If they could go through the cards in a certain amount of time they all got a piece of candy. I decreased the time allowed, as they got better. All students will have to speak clearly and loudly, listen, and stay focused to get through the cards in a set time. --great skills to practice in and of themselves ***** Make sure to count your cards after taking them back up from students. Even one missing card ruins the activity.********
