Current Electricity - Save the Technician Escape Room - Middle School Science

Finish and reinforce the KS3 current electricity module or revisit it prior to exams with this innovative, enjoyable and challenging escape room lesson. Prior knowledge required: · current, voltage and resistance – defining and understanding, units, measuring; · circuits and symbols; · series and parallel circuits – current, voltage, switches, lamps; · current and voltage varying with number of batteries; · Ohms Law. Pupils have to work their way through the clues to find the code to a box with a combination lock containing an antidote to a substance, accidentally ingested by the laboratory. The substance is the departments a prototype, orally administered sunscreen being developed by the department which has unfortunately been found to turn the skin of mice purple and which has not yet been tested on humans and is also therefore potentially toxic. The pack contains: · PowerPoint – scene setting and instructions (sound effects and built-in timer); · crossword ; · word search; · dominoes activity; · worksheet Differentiated over 2 versions); · code breaker sheet; · answer keys; · lesson plan. If time is limited just the crossword , word search and domino can be used. With a minimum of 50 minutes available one of the differentiated worksheets can also be used. The worksheet is the most challenging clue to solve and this can be omitted completely for less able classes. Both 3 and 4 number combination locks can be purchased very cheaply online if using an actual box containing an unopened bottle of a soft drink, with the label removed, for a member of the winning team to take to the technician. In the absence of a locked box, until the code is found, as each group completes a team member can be dispatched to the prep room for the technician to ”try the code”. Alternatively all the combination locks in the science department had been set to the same combination for an escape room lesson including the one used on the box with the antidote in the prep room. Vocab Grab Bag is an interactive learning and review activity that focuses on academic vocabulary. This math activity can be a part of your sheltered instruction toolbox and is great for both ELLs and native English speakers. Sheltered language strategies are teaching strategies that focus on teaching academic vocabulary at the same time as academic content. These types of strategies have been researched and shown to improve student learning, especially for ELLs. This Vocab Grab Bag game combines both academic vocabulary building and student interaction. When students participate in this activity, they are explicitly required to interact with both academic language and content at the same time. This Vocab Grab Bag resource contains -Vocabulary Cards; you will need one set of cards per group. -”How to play vocab grab bag” text Instructions to project -Cheat Sheet: Words and definitions -Job cards for groups of 3, 4, or 5; you will need one set of job cards per group -(Optional) Alphabetizing Mat; if you use this additional activity, print one mat per group. -Answer Key for Alphabetizing Mat You will need to supply your own bag, envelope, or container for the word cards. How to play Vocab Grab Bag 1.Cut out the vocab cards and place one set of cards in each bag, envelope or container that you are using. 2.Organize students into groups of 3, 4, or 5. I have found that groups of 4 seem to be optimal. 3.Give each student one Job Card. 4.Students go in order, starting with Job 1 until they have completed one round. Do not return the used words to the container. 5. After each round, students rotate jobs, passing the Job Cards in the order you designate. 6. Continue until the teacher stops the game . 7. Alternate option #1: When all word cards have been used, transition to putting the words in alphabetical order, using the Alphabetizing Mat. 8. Alternate option #2: If all word cards have been used, return all the cards to the container and start over again. Teacher tips •Do not skip the praise step, it is important and surprisingly fun! •If you have a student in the very early stages of learning English, consider letting them keep Job 1 or Job 2 for the entire game . •Project the instructions at the front of the room for students to refer to while playing.

This fully editable Lab Station on The Particle Theory and the Classification of Matter is meant to get your students out of their seats and engaged in the content. Each station not only offers a unique opportunity to test your students' knowledge (offer an opinion, answer questions based on a video or reading, draw, etc.), but also provides a fantastic learning opportunity where your kids are learning through assessment. Each station comes with a description card while some also contain more detailed instructions, a reading, questions to answer, etc. Students are equipped with a recording sheet (passport) to write their answers. There is almost no prep for you. Simply print the cards, lay them out around the room and you're all set. An answer key is also provided where applicable. This lab activity covers: - The particle theory - Matter classification - Mixtures --> Homogeneous (solutions) --> Heterogeneous (mechanical mixtures) - Pure substances --> Elements --> Compounds How do the Lab Stations work? Each station is specially designed to be a unique complement to the material while at the same time, provide a valuable learning experience. Below is an overview of how each station works. In your activity , each will be tailored to the specific content. Station 1: Get Hands-On – using their creative skills, students are required to draw or build. Station 2: Research – using a classroom computer or their own device, students must research a specific question/issue surrounding the topic. Station 3: Explain yourself – students write down an opinion to a question in paragraph form. "The Hero of the French and Indian War – Major Robert Rogers" - A History Play

I use this interactive play to introduce someone to my students who is largely forgotten in American History. His name is Major Robert Rogers. Rogers is one of the big heroes for the British and Americans during the French and Indian War. He was a living legend in his time. In this play I have included printables /parts-of-and-anatomy-of">parts of his life during the French and Indian War including two of the most well-known events - his escape from capture in the Second Battle of Snowshoes and his raid on St. Francis. Rogers and his "Rangers" accomplished many tasks thought to be too difficult or outright impossible, but these two cemented his status as hero and legend. Another part of the play explains a little about the Rangers (think special forces of the 18th century) and how Rogers took anyone - British, American, Native American - and any of these men could lead no matter their birth or race if they showed promise.

My Mount Rushmore is an engaging inquiry-based project where students select the four U.S. presidents they believe are most deserving of being carved into Mount Rushmore. Students research lesser-known presidents and debate who has left the biggest impact and legacy.
