These are two social studies, world cultures, separate advisory or homeroom lessons to help students understand the world better. They could be two separate lessons or one long one. The pictures shown are from the videos. In the "If The World Were 100 People" lesson, the engaging video link describes the world's population filtering for income, technology, language, etc. In the editable handout, teachers can tailor the analysis to their city and school. Students will answer questions about the video as well as analyze their own city and school communities. In the Dollar Street lesson, there is a video link to view the explanation of the Dollar Street tool-which examines families in 50 countries. The tool displays the homes as if they all lived on the same street where the richest live on the right and the poorest live on the left and everyone else in between. It is an amazing tool. This comprehensive lesson introduces the idea of the political spectrum (left vs. right), the basic values for each side, and common political values in any region. Here is a simple introduction to the political spectrum and political beliefs that can apply to any country or region. It includes: - A handout that shows the names of left and right kinds of government (Communist, Socialist, Liberal, Moderate, Conservative, Right Wing, Fascist) and their main beliefs about the economy, social programs, moral issues, values, progress, and human nature. - A sorting task (cut and paste) of political beliefs on crime and punishment, social programs, the economy, abortion, guns, freedom of expression and more. Students cut out the 12 statements and sort 6 to the left and 6 to the right. Then they try to think of (or research) some beliefs that would fall more to the centre. - A research graphic organizer for local political parties (municipal, state/provincial or federal in any country). In this Smart Cookie game (2022 version), students try and race each other to be the first one to guess the answer based on one at a time clues after one at a time clicks via Presentation mode on Google Slides. This is based on the wildly popular game Smart A** but more applicable and relevant to elementary-high schoolers. I have included many references to popular t.v. shows and famous people the students born after 2001 would know. This is a trivial pursuit-like game but more fun and students feel more successful. It is just for fun and perfect for Zoom, an ice breaker or indoor recess but they might even learn something! There are 3 categories; Who Am I?, Where Am I?, and What Am I? There are 42 slides for each category. Use in Presentation mode for your class. There are answer sheets at the end for each card so the Game Leader can reference quickly and keep track of the cards used. This is in PowerPoint so the completed cards will turn black after being used for easy game play. In this new 2022 version there are all new cards for each category!
