Sort/Group Non-Identical objects - early learner activity
Special Resources, Special Education Needs (SEN), Speech Therapy, Math, Early Math, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Activities
The activity involves sorting and grouping different non-identical items, which can be used to develop cognitive skills such as categorization, visual discrimination, and problem-solving. To begin the activity , the learner is presented with a sorting picture. Pictures include in this activity : dog doughnut ice cream bar apple shoes chair butterfly hotdog car rabbit socks happy face The next step is to provide the learner with six corresponding sorting cards, each picture non identical to the sorting picture. The items on the sorting cards may vary in color, size, shape, and other attributes, which allows the learner to practice visual discrimination and identify key characteristics of each category. The learner's task is to sort/group each individual sorting card to the correct sorting picture. This requires the learner to analyze and compare the different items, and determine which picture they belong to based on their similarities and differences. As the learner progresses through the activity , they can be challenged to group the items in different ways, such as by color, size, shape, or texture. This encourages the learner to think creatively and develop flexible thinking skills. This early learning sorting activity provides an engaging and interactive way to develop cognitive skills and promote learning in a fun and playful manner. This activity is easy to create and is clean and clear of visual distractions which allows the learner to focus on the task at hand. First print and laminate all cards, then cut out the individual sorting cards and velcro to the corresponding picture activity mat. If have a coil binder you can coil bind this activity , or else you can three hole punch the mats and put them in a binder or use binding rings for many years of teaching and learning. 1. Introduction It is known by teachers, managers and all educational entities, even ordinary citizens, that mathematics is fundamental in daily life, because it provides multiple benefits at an academic and cultural level as well as in solving problems of daily life. 2.Objective The objective of this game is to promote the development of mathematics and also: -Develop logical and analytical thinking, which implies the ability to think logically, and approach problems in a structured way, whose skills are transferable to many aspects of daily life. -Encourage problem-solving skills, because mathematics will teach students to approach problems in a more systemic way by finding effective solutions. -Encourage abstract thinking, because students will often see that mathematics involves many symbolic and abstract concepts, and working with these concepts from the time they are in school will help them to better understand complex phenomena when they are adults and be able to solve problems in various areas. -It will promote their preparation for technical and scientific careers: as is known, many careers that our students will choose in the future, such as science, technology, engineering, require solid mathematical knowledge to carry out research, solve problems and for the development of new technologies. 3.Order, scheme and stages - Introduce your math class with a relaxing song. Financial Literacy: Compound Interest with Percent and Formula
Life Studies, Math, Decimals, Money, Finance, Home Economics, Business, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities
These high school financial literacy worksheets will show your students why compound interest is helpful for investors while also letting them practice math skills using percentages and a simple mathematic formula! How to Use: Print 4 pages for each student. Page 1 teaches students how to calculate compound interest step by step. Students need to have a basic understanding of writing percentages in decimal form and multiplying to find the percent of a number. Next, students will be given their initial investment amount & a yearly interest rate. Each student in your class can be given different values so they have to do their own unique calculations, and to allow comparisons to be made. This provides for easy differentiation as well- you can choose what percentage interest rate each student gets based on their ability. Students will calculate the amount of compound interest they earn over ten years. They can then check their calculations using the compound interest formula that is included. Next, they can use the formula to calculate compound interest over longer periods of time. Your class can compare their results- leading to an interesting class discussion (prompt questions are included). Make sure to point out how compound interest is helpful for investing and saving and detrimental for borrowing money. Finally, students reflect on their learning by writing a paragraph after the lesson. Hopefully they will leave class wanting to start a saving account! Grades to Use With: This compound interest lesson with worksheets is designed for high school students in grades 8 through 12. It could be used in math, applied math, financial literacy, or consumer math classes. What's Included: 6 pages in PDF format: Ready to Print and Use! Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Early Algebra: Patterns, Expressions, Tables, Graphing, and Equations
Math, Patterns, Algebra, Graphing, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Centers, Activities
Math stations are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about early algebra concepts: patterns, expressions, tables, graphing & equations. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Word problems (Optional: set out white boards for students to use): These four word problems are about realistic situations involving money, memberships, and patterns. There is also a question that gets students thinking about how to solve equations using very simple numbers. Station 2: Partner game to practice evaluating expressions. Students play an "input/output machine" game with a partner. They will mentally evaluate simple expressions until their partner can guess which expression they are using from the chart. Then they switch roles. Station 3: Students create a growing pattern and write an expression to represent it. (Supplies needed: some kind of counters or cubes to make the pattern) I find my students often struggle to figure out the expression for a pattern in a table. One trick I use is to teach them to "Mind the Gap!" Look for the "gap" in the second column of the pattern. In this case it is increasing by 4. Always multiply that number by the variable, therefore 4n. Then see what you have to add or subtract to make it true for all of the inputs (in this case +2). Station 4: Practice solving one-step equations and graphing simple patterns. Students can use multiple methods to solve the one-step equations. Then they graph the growth of two plants and notice when one grows taller and why. Station 5: Students explain their thinking about equations in words in response to a journal prompt. Optional extension: online game to practice solving equations in a step-by-step manner. Grades to Use With: These stations could work with grades 5-8 or high school special education classes. Standards: CCSS5.OA.A.2 CCSS5.OA.B.3 CCSS6.EE.A.2 CCSS6.EE.B.5 CCSS6.EE.B.6 CCSS7.EE.B.4 If you like these stations, check out my other sets: Integer Stations Area, Perimeter, and Volume Stations Factors and Multiples Stations Decimals and Percent Stations
