Valentine's Day Proportion Pixel Art Activity This Valentine's Day themed, proportions activity offers a fun and engaging way for your students to practice. They will solve 20 proportions using Google Sheets and as they answer each question correctly, a mystery picture pixel art will be revealed. If their answer is wrong, the pixel art will not appear. My seventh-grade students enjoyed this no-prep, self-checking activity when I used it as a sub-plan. This is a self-check practice where students will know when they arrive at the right answer. It is easy to implement, as students can access it through the link embedded on the PDF. This activity may be implemented after a lesson, as a closing activity, an exit ticket or even a formative assessment . Additionally, students may work individually, together in pairs, or even in groups, to arrive at the right answer and have the picture reveal. It can also be set up as a center activity or for a tutoring session with individual students. If there is no ability to set up this activity as google sheet for individual students, it can always just be printed out for students to provide the answers and then the teacher can show the mystery picture to all students. This is a great resource, easy to implement, engaging for students, self-check, and just as important, a fun way for students to practice with a fun theme of Valentine's Day!

When teaching elementary students about elapsed time, make it personal and fun! This easy-to-use math project lets students in grades 3-6 learn about measuring the duration of time (time intervals) as they plan their perfect day. Students learn what elapsed time is and practice calculating it with a sample schedule of a teacher’s perfect day (don't worry, I included a Target run AND a nap!). Then they create their own perfect 15-hour day and calculate the elapsed time of each of their 10 activities. They can write elapsed times in hours and minutes (1 hour and 35 minutes) or in minutes only (95 minutes). They cross-check their math by adding up all 10 elapsed times and seeing if they equal the total awake time of their day (15 hours). They can use a variety of strategies to calculate elapsed time: subtraction, counting on, counting back, benchmarks, and/or number lines. Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about elapsed time and practicing calculating more challenging time intervals. In the USA, this is in Common Core Standards in the third grade and in British Columbia, Canada, it is addressed in Grade 5. Make Star by Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables

This Make Star by Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables activity provides a fun way for students to practice graphing linear equations in two variables. Students will graph 16 eqations on the same coordinate plane. The lines graphed will make a star and then students can color their own. Please see the pictures uploaded. There are two options for equations for students to graph. One sheet has all equations in slope-intercept form. The second sheet has half the equations in slope - intercept form and half in standard form. Students can graph using the slope and y - intercept or using the zeros of the function or a combination of both. The equations have whole numbers, fractions, and positive and negative numbers. There are even 4 equations where the y - intercept is a fraction. You have the option of not using these equations because a sheet with those lines already graphed is included. I suggest you, the teacher, make a copy of the key on an overhead sheet. You can then check the students every 4 to 5 lines that they graph. Students will number their lines to help you check their work and more easily identify incorrect lines. This was a favorite of my students. A great way to reinforce graphing.

Mixed Numbers Recipe Doubling – Real-World Math

Butter Tart Recipe (based on my grandma's actual delicious family recipe!) Here is a real-life example to help students practice adding and multiplying mixed numbers and improper fractions. When students ask, "When will we ever use this in real-life?!" you can show them this lesson and say that working with fractions is so common in baking. This delicious activity will allow students to practice using fractions with a realistic everyday example: baking! Students will take a recipe that has several fractions in it and double it. Half a cup of something becomes a cup and 3/4 of a cup becomes 1 and a half cups. After that, they need to figure out how much of each ingredient would be needed if the recipe was made five times bigger (perhaps in a bakery setting or for a large event). I encourage my students to use different strategies to complete this task: drawing pictures with squares, repeated addition, or multiplication. Boxes for diagrams and math calculations are included to encourage students to show their work. You could even have different students come up to show their personal strategies to the rest of the class. As an extension, students can bring in their own recipes from home in the next class and double them or multiply them by five as well. You might even want to actually make something tasty to eat too! Teaching students about data is great skill because they get to look at information in a new way. Analyzing and compiling data requires critical thinking skills from our math students. We want to ensure we have interactive practice opportunities to help students connect the dots. This resource can do just that! This is Mr. Sylvester’s Socks Graphing Activity. It is a 4-page printable that was designed for your 2nd and 3rd grade students. The objective of this product is for students to be able to correctly analyze data from graphs, answer questions about graphs and create graphs. The worksheets included are: 1. Socks in Stock – This page has a graph that represents the socks in stock at a local clothing store. Students will answer 6 questions for this graph. 2. Mr. Sylvester’s Socks – Students will analyze groups based on how Mr. Sylvester has sorted his socks. Students will use this data to correctly color the socks in the left-hand column of the chart . Students will fill in the graph using circles to correctly represent the socks. On the next page, students will get to decide how many of each color sock they think Mr. Sylvester should keep. Based on their number, students will complete questions to note how many socks Mr. Sylvester is getting rid of. 3. Sock it to Us! – Students will collect data for their own socks.
