Hands-on Fractions Activity: Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Egg Cartons is a perfect match for teachers of Grades 3 through 6. This resource aims to introduce improper fractions and mixed numbers to the students using an interactive, hands-on, visual, and practical method. The interesting part of this lesson is its hands-on experience provided by a common household object: egg cartons! By making abstract fraction concepts tangible, this lesson makes learning more accessible for all students. How to Use: Each group of students receives an empty egg carton, counters, and a worksheet for each member. The class then collaboratively works through each specified amount of eggs (3, 6, 8, 14, 19, 30), step-by-step with the teacher's guidance. Students place counters in their concrete eggs cartons, colour in the model on their worksheet, and then write the fraction. This is a great application of the Concrete, Representational, Abstract math teaching philosophy. When possible, students reduce fractions to lowest terms. When there are more than twelve eggs, students get a chance to write an improper fraction and the corresponding mixed number. By using these hands-on tools, the relationship between these two types of fractions should become more clear. -GIRL VERSION- Why we teach sorting and grouping - Sorting and grouping are important skills for young children to learn because they lay the foundation for many other important academic and life skills. Sorting and grouping involve categorizing objects based on common attributes such as color, shape, size, and function. These skills help children to understand and make sense of the world around them. This is a color sorting activity for early learners. This activity is simple, engaging and can help children develop their cognitive, motor and social skills. To conduct this activity , you will need two large cards - one red and one blue, and twelve smaller cards - six cards that are blue and six cards that are red. (There are multiple types of color cards to choose from 1) square color cards 2) square color card with the word of the color on the card 3) color word cards. These different smaller cards adds variety and interest to the activity and helps individualize to different learners. Here are the steps for conducting this activity : 1. Start by introducing the two large color cards to the children and ask them to identify the colors. 2. Then, show them the smaller cards and ask them to identify the colors of these cards as well. 3. Explain to the children that they need to sort the smaller cards onto the larger color cards based on their colors. 4. Model the activity by sorting a few cards yourself and asking the children to observe. Once you have modeled the activity , give each child a set of smaller cards and ask them to sort them onto the corresponding color card. As the children are sorting, observe and offer support and guidance as needed. This color sorting activity is a great way to help young children develop their visual discrimination skills, color recognition skills, and cognitive skills. It also promotes socialization and communication skills as children share their thoughts and ideas with each other. The activity involves sorting and grouping different non-identical items, which can be used to develop cognitive skills such as categorization, visual discrimination, and problem-solving. To begin the activity , the learner is presented with a sorting picture. Pictures include in this activity : dog doughnut ice cream bar apple shoes chair butterfly hotdog car rabbit socks happy face The next step is to provide the learner with six corresponding sorting cards, each picture non identical to the sorting picture. The items on the sorting cards may vary in color, size, shape, and other attributes, which allows the learner to practice visual discrimination and identify key characteristics of each category. The learner's task is to sort/group each individual sorting card to the correct sorting picture. This requires the learner to analyze and compare the different items, and determine which picture they belong to based on their similarities and differences. As the learner progresses through the activity , they can be challenged to group the items in different ways, such as by color, size, shape, or texture. This encourages the learner to think creatively and develop flexible thinking skills. This early learning sorting activity provides an engaging and interactive way to develop cognitive skills and promote learning in a fun and playful manner. This activity is easy to create and has large clean and clear of visual distractions which allows the learner to focus on the task at hand. First print and laminate all cards, then cut out the individual sorting cards and velcro to the corresponding picture activity mat. If have a coil binder you can coil bind this activity , or else you can three hole punch the mats and put them in a binder or use binding rings for many years of teaching and learning.
