Scientist Hans Krebs - Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Version (PDF & H5P) Hans Krebs – Cellular Respiration and the Discovery of the Krebs Cycle Fact Sheet, Quiz & Interactive Exercises (PDF + H5P) 🔁🧬 This 45-minute resource introduces students in grades 10–12 to Hans Krebs – the scientist who uncovered one of the most important metabolic pathways in our cells: the citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle. When teaching cellular respiration, many students can follow the basics of glucose breakdown and ATP production – but the details of what happens in the mitochondria often feel abstract. Krebs' discovery in the 1930s helped explain how cells extract energy efficiently from food molecules through a cycle of chemical reactions. It’s a key part of understanding aerobic respiration and metabolism. To make this complex process more accessible, I’ve created a structured lesson that includes a short informational text, a fact sheet, quiz questions with answers, and a creative partner task. All materials are available in color and black-and-white, plus there’s a digital H5P version for interactive learning. What’s included: A student-friendly text about Hans Krebs and the citric acid cycle A fact sheet to help visualize and summarize the steps of the cycle Quiz questions (with answer key) for quick review or comprehension checks A creative task where students develop and exchange their own questions in pairs Formats: Printable PDF and interactive H5P 💻 Answer key included ✅ I’ve used this resource during our unit on cellular respiration, often right after glycolysis and before moving on to the electron transport chain. It’s especially helpful for students who benefit from breaking down complex processes into steps. The partner activity works well for revision or as preparation for assessments. 🚀 Download now and bring the legacy of Hans Krebs into your biology lessons today! 📍 Best wishes, Heike from Lernfitness Did You Know? Guided Reading Level M - Science of Vaccines (with Lesson Plan)

Guided Reading Level M - Science of Vaccines (with Lesson Plan)
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Science, Life Sciences, Health, P.E. & Health, Pre-Reading, Language Development, Grade 1, 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments

This Guided Reading Book - Science of Vaccines (Level M) with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: The Science of Vaccines Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Life Science (human body/health) Primary Topic: How vaccines help the immune system Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): M What This Book Teaches Best What a vaccine is and how it “teaches” the immune system to recognize and fight dangerous germs. What germs are, why many are too small to see without a microscope, and that microscopic invaders are found in nature. The immune system’s job as a protective “security team” that identifies and removes germs that do not belong. How scientists make vaccines using a very small, harmless part of a germ, and why it is not strong enough to cause real sickness. How antibodies and memory cells help the body respond now and later, and how vaccines can help protect communities when most people are vaccinated. Learning Goals Students will explain how the text describes a vaccine helping the body stay healthy. Students will describe what germs are like and why a microscope is needed to see many of them. Students will describe the immune system’s main job as explained in the book. Students will explain what scientists use to create a vaccine and why it does not cause real sickness. Students will describe how the immune system makes antibodies and what antibodies do to the germ. Students will explain what memory cells do and how vaccines can help protect communities. Key Vocabulary From the Text immune — related to the body’s system for fighting germs. microscopic — so small it can’t be seen without a microscope. antibodies — special proteins that latch onto germs and mark them. injection — a quick shot using a small needle. bloodstream — the blood moving through the body. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What do you think your body does to protect you from germs? Comprehension questions: How does the text say a vaccine helps the immune system recognize and fight germs? Comprehension questions: What do scientists use to create a vaccine, according to the book? Comprehension questions: What do “memory cells” do if a strong germ tries to enter the body later? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. The Sun Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Language Development, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Writing, Science, Earth Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Space, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans

This Sun reading comprehension includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: The Sun Genre: Nonfiction (informational text with support pages) Subject: Science (Space Science) Primary Topic: How the Sun affects Earth and works Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S What This Lesson Teaches Best How people used the Sun and changing shadows to notice time long before clocks, phones, and apps. How telescopes in the early 1600s revealed sunspots and helped people realize the Sun can change and even spin. How the Sun shines for so long because nuclear fusion joins hydrogen to make helium and releases energy as sunlight and heat. Key facts about the Sun’s size and importance in the solar system (about 1.39 million kilometres across; holds almost all the mass in the solar system). Archimedes – Scientist Profile and Comprehension Activities Informational Text, Student Tasks & Quiz (PDF, DOCX, H5P) ⚖️🧠 This resource introduces students in grades 7–10 to Archimedes, one of the most influential figures in early science. Best known for his work on buoyancy and the principle of density determination for irregular objects, Archimedes connects classical thought with key scientific concepts still taught today. The material combines factual reading with structured tasks. It can be used flexibly: in science lessons, for cross-curricular units, or as an easy-to-run activity in substitute teaching. Students read a short informational text, fill in a profile worksheet, complete quiz questions, and – if time allows – create their own questions to exchange with a partner. What’s included: Informational text about Archimedes Profile worksheet for comprehension and reflection Answer key for the profile Quiz questions with solutions Two extension tasks: – Create your own questions – Exchange and answer a partner’s questions File formats: – Printable PDF – Editable DOCX (text only) – Interactive H5P version (text-based, no images) In the classroom: I’ve used this kind of resource in regular science lessons as well as in non-specialist cover lessons. The tasks are clear enough for independent work and provide a good balance between reading, writing, and critical thinking. The H5P version allows for easy digital use on learning platforms, especially when students work from home or on devices in class. It’s also great for differentiation: stronger students can work on their own questions, while others use the glossary or reread sections to complete the basics. Whether you use it to introduce Archimedes in physics or to practice nonfiction reading strategies, this is a flexible resource that’s ready to go with little prep. Have fun exploring the world of science with your students! Warmly, Lernfitness Did You Know? I teach with a certified therapy dog, and together we focus on creating a positive and inspiring learning environment.

This Guided Reading Book - What Happens to Recyclables (Level H) includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: What Happens to Recyclables Genre: Nonfiction (informational) Subject: Science (Environmental Science) Primary Topic: How recyclables are collected, sorted, and reused Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): H What This Book Teaches Best How recycling begins at home: people put materials in blue bins for a special truck. What happens at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), including the “tipping floor” and conveyor belts. How workers and machines separate materials (sorting workers, a magnetic separator, optical sorters using infrared light, and star screens). What happens after sorting: materials are crushed into bales, moved by forklifts, taken to factories, and made into new products. Learning Goals Describe how recyclables get from blue bins to a truck and are hauled away. Explain what the book says happens when a truck arrives at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Identify what sorting workers remove from the conveyor belts and give examples from the text. Explain how a magnetic separator changes what stays on the line and what gets pulled away. Describe how optical sorters use infrared light and air to separate plastic bottles. Describe what happens to sorted materials after they are made into bales and sent to factories. Key Vocabulary From the Text sanitation — keeping places clean by picking up trash and recyclables. facility — a place or building where work happens. conveyor — a moving belt that carries things from one place to another. separator — something that pulls different materials apart. infrared — a kind of light machines can use to tell things apart. How rivers move rock pieces and help make them “smooth and round,” and how ocean waves help build beaches. How sand can be different colors and how those colors can come from different materials (like volcanic lava, coral, and seashells). How sand can look different under a microscope and what sand’s colors can reveal about minerals inside it. Why sand is important to people and nature (uses in products and roles like protecting coastlines and providing habitat). Learning Goals Students will describe where sand is found and what it can cover in the world. Students will explain how weathering breaks rocks into smaller and smaller pieces over time. Students will describe how rivers carry rock fragments and how moving water changes the rocks’ edges. Students will explain what happens when a river reaches the ocean and how waves help create a beach. Students will identify different kinds/colors of sand described in the text and what they come from. Students will describe at least one way sand helps humans and one way it helps Earth’s surface. Key Vocabulary From the Text weathering — breaking rocks into smaller pieces over time. fragments — small broken pieces. volcanic — related to volcanoes and lava. microscope — tool that helps you see tiny things. habitat — place where a plant or animal lives. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: What are some natural forces that might change big rocks over a long time? Comprehension questions: What does the text say weathering does to rocks over millions of years? Comprehension questions: According to the text, what happens when a river reaches the ocean that helps create a beach?
