Here is a fun, print 'n play phonic game for the split digraph a-e! Help your pupils to grasp the tricky split digraph concept as they play! Who is the a-e game suitable for? All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two players. The teacher should watch if two children are playing together. Each player takes a game board which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The selected picture cards are scattered on the table face down. Players take it in turns to choose a picture card. The player says the word and listens to the vowel sound. Is it short /a/, or long /a-e/? If it belongs on the player’s board, it is placed on one of the oblongs. If not, it is returned to the table, face down. The winner is the player who completes his/her board first. Teaching tips: Support children to sound words out/blend them as needed. Help children to hear the vowel sound by emphasizing it and stretching it out. Help the child to do this as well. Have fun - as this eases children over those tricky spots! Here’s a ready-to-go math inquiry activity for your geometry unit. Students are tasked with drawing all the rectangles they can create with a specific area (24 units squared). Then, they calculate the perimeter of each rectangle. Finally, a prompt helps them notice the relationship between area and perimeter. Shapes that are longer and thinner will have a larger perimeter than other shapes with the same area. How to Use: Use this activity once your students have already had some practice calculating area and perimeter of rectangles. You could do a quick mini lesson about finding factors before handing out this activity , as your students need to determine the factors of 24 to complete this task (1x24, 2x12, 3x8 4x6). I let students work in pairs or small groups to complete this task as I want them talking about their math ideas! Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about area and perimeter of right-angle shapes (rectangles). Students then can take home the Bingo sheet to reference at home.

Letter C Beginning Sounds Sort

This beginning sound sort for the letter C is a great hands on activity for recognizing the beginning sound of the letter C. This is an easy and fun activity to give students who need practice with recognizing the letter C sound from amongst other letter sounds or for those students who need extra practice distinguishing between the initial sounds in words. To complete this sorting activity , students will look at a chocolate chip to determine if the picture begins with the letter C or does not begin with the letter C, and then the students will place the chocolate chip on the correct cookie. This sorting activity includes 3 pages that contains * One cookie mat for pictures that begin with the letter C * One cookie mat for pictures that do not begin with the letter C * Chocolate chip pictures that begin with C: carrot, cat, candle, cupcake, candy, cake * Chocolate chip pictures that do not begin with C: sandwich, pie, ant, grapes, watermelon, pretzel This beginning sound sort can be used in the following ways * Literacy centers * Fine motor centers * File folder activity * Add magnets to the picture cards for a baking tray activity * Small group activities * Morning work * Emergency sub plans Skills assessed with these letter C initial sound sort * Initial Sound of the letter C * Distinguishing between words that begin with C and do not begin with C * Ability to sort the picture cards on to the correct mat This beginning sounds sorting activity is a low prep activity . All a teacher needs to do is to print the three pages, cut out the picture cards, and laminate the pages and cards if desired. The activity is easy to set up and to put away and store.
