A scaffolded, 4-step middle school lesson teaching students to write argumentative essay body paragraphs by reading and analyzing a debate prompt/text before drafting paragraphs, culminating in an assessed writing task, with both printable and digital versions.
Use the six-part FAUCET outline to plan a counterclaim paragraph about recess, cell phones, social media or summer break. The file includes a four-claim worksheet, quoted excerpts, a blank outline, sentence strips and sample paragraphs. Cut and mix the strips for a sequencing task, or use the outline for original writing. Review the models before use: some conclusions do not follow from their evidence, and the summer-break example mistakenly refers to retiring summer school.
Students learn the resource’s hook–arch–thesis structure, then apply it to short reading-based prompts over three practice sessions.
