Students write a creative nonfiction narrative about a significant childhood memory — a family event, an adventure, an experience with a friend, or a memory involving a difficult choice — built around a protagonist, a foil character, a central conflict, and a five-part story arc from introduction through resolution. A reflection activity has students brainstorm four candidate memories before choosing one, a narrative-map page asks them to draw the physical setting and label five story locations, alongside planning setting, foil character, conflict, and theme, and a narrative outline organizes the draft by story-arc stage. Before submitting a final draft, students complete a peer-edit worksheet that checks for a clear theme, narrative techniques, and a structured story arc, with a participation rubric scoring the peer-edit conversation itself. The finished narrative can then be scored against either a 40-point short-form rubric or a 90-point long-form rubric, each covering writing style, narrative technique, theme, and command of language.
