Traffic Light Feelings – SEL Self-Regulation Lesson

In this 7-slide Google Slides Lesson Presentation, students will learn about the Traffic Light Feelings. This is a self-regulation tool that helps students identify when they are being unsafe, have a big emotion, and need to stop. Red feelings are feelings that are BIG such as really angry, scared, unsafe, or out of control. Students will learn the phrase STOP, SLOW AND GO strategy. The yellow light represents feelings that are silly, excited, worried, stressed, or frustrated. The green light represents feelings that are good for class, with peers in the class or when they need to focus on a task. There is a sorting activity with 18 sorting cards. Some of the scenarios on the cards are; kids who are too excited and silly with their parent, a child who is very upset and visibly crying, 2 kids arguing, 2 kids fighting, a child who is calm, a child who is reading, a child who is proud about graduating, a child who is raising their hand, a child in their own personal space bubble, a child who is frustrated about breaking a toy, a child who is thinking, a child who is running from a crocodile, children who are jumping in excitement, a child scared about talking in front of an audience, etc. First, you can show the 7 slide presentation with animations throughout the presentation. Next, the students will work in partners/group to do the sorting activity. They will get a sorting sheet and 18 cards. Print off a sorting sheet and 18 cards for each partnership/group. Lastly, invite students back at their own desk to color in their traffic light coloring sheet and think of the different feelings represented in each light. There are 7 slides in the presentation for the class and there are 5 slides that contain the sorting activity, sorting cards, and coloring sheet. Lego-Themed Emotion Regulation Lesson

In this Lego themed lesson, students will learn about the different zones made up of feelings and energy levels. There are directions for lesson one and two. The first lesson is to teach about the zones and to use a Lego themed poster to help explain them. There is a link to a cute song using Lego characters and teaching about the zones. There are instructions on what students will do next to build a robot, tower or person made up of the color zone(s) they are feeling. For example, if the student is feeling happy and tired, the structure would be made up of green and blue bricks. It is important to buy either Legos or a generic brand of toy bricks for this lesson. After the students create their structures, they can share with a partner, group or class. In the 2nd part of the lesson, students will discuss different types of strategies for how to move from the red, yellow or blue zones and get back to the green zone. They will then build a structure that represents a calm down strategy for them to use when they are in the other zones besides green and need to be focused to learn. For example students can build a cup to represent getting a drink of water. Then students will reflect on their learning by filling out a worksheet. This is a fun, engaging, and hands-on lesson to teach about emotion regulation. It is suitable for kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Each student can bring home the poster to share with their families. Then families can reinforce these concepts at home with their children. However, the pictures are so simple and adorable, they can be enjoyed by people of all ages. I adore this series so much that i have collected all of them despite that my son is almost 20 years old. As a result, I created the first of what I hope to be a series of reading comprehension and guided reading activity packs to make learning more fun for early elementary students as well as special education students and those with special needs in the areas of speech and communication. The book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late," is required reading in order for students to complete all of the activities. It is available for purchase at Amazon and at Mo Willems own website. You can also find it at your local library to check out. Students will practice reading and learn about grammar, spelling, and increase vocabulary.
