ELL Academic Vocabulary Grade 4 word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this academic vocabulary puzzle set for my 4th graders during our reading and writing block. The kids could do the work but had no idea what words like "analyze," "summarize," or "infer" meant when I gave them directions. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like analyze, summarize, infer, evaluate, explain, describe, compare, contrast, identify, locate, define, state, retell, and support. I also included a few key content-area terms like main idea, detail, sequence, cause, effect, and fact/opinion because they show up in every subject. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the direction words finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the difference between "summarize" and "retell." The crossword I use for partners or as a warm-up before a lesson. I added a couple simple checkmark, pencil, and book drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 4th grade, especially for English learners who need extra exposure to academic language. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word and use it in a sentence on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

Student Inventors word search, scramble and crossword puzzle I made this student inventors puzzle set for my 4th graders during our social studies and STEM unit. The kids had heard of famous inventors like Edison and Bell, but they had no idea that kids their own age invented everyday things like the Popsicle (Frank Epperson was 11), ear muffs (Chester Greenwood was 15), and the trampoline (George Nissen was 16) . They were amazed to learn that kids came up with these ideas and it sparked a lot of questions about the process of inventing. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like inventor, invention, patent, creative, idea, solve, problem, experiment, design, improve, and prototype . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick. The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "prototype" or whether the Popsicle was actually invented by accident (it was — the kids always have opinions about it). I added a couple simple red X and checkmark drawings but nothing too busy. Works for 3rd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write five of their own commonly misspelled words on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.

What is Included: Alphabet Mazes - There are two alphabet mazes, one for capital letters and one for lowercase letters. Students will go through the maze by coloring or dotting the candy corn from A to Z. Apple Emergent Reader - There is one emergent reader where students will read about the trick or treaters. Missing Letters - The student will write the missing letter in each letter sequence. Alphabet Cut and Paste - Students will cut out the lowercase letters and glue them next to their corresponding capital letter. Letter Sort - Students will sort letters by whether they are capital letters or lowercase letters. Prewriting Lines - There are two prewriting worksheets. In the first worksheet, students will trace straight lines in a variety of directions from left to right. On the second worksheet, students will trace a variety of lines from left to right, including curves and zigzags. Letter Tracing - There are 6 handwriting worksheets for students to practice writing capital letters and lowercase letters. Three worksheets are for capital letters and three worksheets are for lowercase letters. Syllable Counting - Students will sort Halloween themed pictures according to how many syllables are in each word. These worksheets make great independent practice, emergency sub plans, and can even be used for homework. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like ask, help, question, need, want, raise hand, call, teacher, parent, friend, and explain.
