It focuses on geometry concepts related to triangles: classification, types of angles, formula for area of a triangle, and calculating volume of a triangular prism. How to Use: Five ready-to-print math stations about the study of triangles. Put each station in a different area in the room. Students can rotate through a set time intervals (every 15-20 minutes), or you can allow students to work at their own pace as long as no station gets too crowded. Station 1: Students solve four word problems involving triangles. Station 2: Students explore the relationships for interior angles in triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. Station 3: Students play a simple dice game to practice classifying types of triangles. Station 4: Students work together to explain the rationale behind the area formula for triangles. Station 5: Students calculate the surface area and volume of a house shape (rectangular and triangular prism compound shape). Here's a fun and hands-on way for your students to practice estimating square roots & cube roots using logical mental math strategies and known benchmarks. It's a simple matching game for students in 8th & 9th grade when they are learning about square roots & cube roots in math class. How to Use: Print a worksheet for each of your students along with a set of 24 matching cards for each group of two to four students. First, students need to complete their Square and Cube Roots Cheat Sheet. Give them time in class to do this in pairs or small groups. They should hold on to this sheet for the whole unit as it will be a useful resource. Let them practice estimating square and cube roots with the five practice questions. Financial Literacy: Bank Statement and Credit Card Bill Practice Activity A useful teaching resource, this activity is designed to arm students with necessary skills around reconciling bank accounts and managing monthly expenses. This hands-on lesson promotes the understanding of financial literacy through realistic practice with everyday financial documents - namely credit card bills and checking account statements. Grades to Use With: This lesson is suitable for students in grade 7 through grade 12, depending on your situation. It can be utilized in a variety of subjects such as Career and Personal Planning, Life Skills, Home Economics, and Math. The math skills required are adding and subtracting with money amounts up the the thousands of dollars. How to Use: Students are given a sample VISA bill with entries for one month's spending. They add up their total spending, reflect on if they should pay off the entire bill each month, add up their spending in specific categories (groceries, gas), and transfer their VISA spending to their checking account to pay off the bill. Next, students are given a sample checking account for one month of spending. They must complete a math operation for each entry. Sometimes that involves adding a deposit to the balance, subtracting a withdrawal from the balance, or figuring out a transaction amount based on a given balance. You can do several entries together as a class, and then assign the rest for your students to complete. Finally, students answer questions about the monthly spending as a whole, and they decide if this person has good financial health. A complete answer key is included. Extreme Environments: Integrated Middle School Science and ELA Debate Activity This assignment is a great way to integrate earth science learning and the English language arts skills of speaking and listening. Students think of relevant reasons for and against humans exploring extreme environments such as the desert, space, and the deep ocean. How to Use: You can split your class into “for” and “against” before they brainstorm and research or afterwards (depending on if you want them to gather information for both sides or not). Then, you can have an informal class debate/discussion with students from each side presenting ideas and rebuttals. Finally, students sum up their personal thoughts in a paragraph. Will they side with what they presented, or will they be swayed by the other side's points? Student Instructions: Extreme environments like the deep ocean, space, volcanoes, and the arctic are full of wonderful sights and discoveries. However, there are downsides to allowing humans to explore these locations. Brainstorm and research reasons for and against allowing human exploration in extreme environments. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in the middle grades (5-8) who are studying extreme environments or space in earth science or science class. It could also be used in English class to target speaking and listening learning standards. Finally, it could be used in high school special education classrooms as well.
